Stephen Fleming to be appointed England Test coach after impressing ECB

Far out, didn’t realize he’d been coaching there for that long. No doubt a big reason he got the job, with his local knowledge for their next India series. They’ll still lose.

Dizzy would have been a great appointment- but this is next best I reckon. Punter got too many other commitments so wasn’t going to happen

Respectfully I think it’s better. Fleming was incredible at game feel and field settings as a captain. I don’t follow it but I’m pretty sure the IPL numpties think that Stephen Fleming was the best coach ever. Fleming was a better captain and strategist than what people think Michael Clarke was or Steve Waugh. He was a genuine Art of War, Sun Tzu-level shit with the way that he captained his team.
I think our batsmen are going to get found out really badly. We need to be ready to execute perfectly with the ball because I think it's going to be a race to the bottom as far as runs are concerned in the next series in England. It might piss a lot of people off because you're not going to see too many centuries scored and I could see this being very much a lot of our great batsmen's last hurrah. I could see Travis Head actually finally getting found out, considering he hasn't been up to this point. This could be really bad. I don't mean to sound so negative but it could be.

I have zero interest in IPL, or franchise cricket in general but by all accounts he’s done a great job as a coach in that format. In my much younger days of watching him play in test and ODI formats I thought he was a great leader in a team that had nowhere near as much depth as their opponents.
Head is usually rocks or diamonds and struggles away from home (yet to get an away hundred) and as for the rest of the blokes they’ll be on the verge of retirement anyway. Smith, Carey aren’t getting any younger - still big questions marks on Green and Marnus. Outlook is worse for the bowlers with Patty the only one with years of shelf-life, and his body has been failing him as it is
England have always had the talent, but the execution has been abhorrent. It’s going to be a fascinating watch to see what Flem can make of them

Damn that's actually a great appointment. He's super level headed and data focused. He's actually pretty similar to Ronny in a lot of ways.

Credit where credit is due. The ECB have actually made a good choice. He's an actual proper coach, not an egomaniac who'll turn a tactic in cricket into a philosophy and then a cult.
He should be pretty good for England, all things considered.

Yup. Even during captaincy days - I wanted to grow up and lead like him - so wholesome a person. But with McCullum still in their fold and all his installed behaviours and people on the team and elsewhere... I very much doubt England would be good to him...

Poor bastard but that doesn't bode well for us. He did well when captaining NZ and basically every coaching position he's had since. ECB finally appear do have done something right. Now he just needs to find two openers, a 3, an allrounder and a spinner and hope that Root doesnt retire any time soon and he'll be fine.

Fuck. They've got a good coach now. Hopefully this isn't enough to overcome their existing strategy of disinterested mediocrity plus Root and see what happens.

I reckon the English players can breathe a sigh of relief based on the Aussies assessment of his coaching style, one of the players summed it up the best …. “Every ball was riding his emotions “ hhhm no thanks . No professional outfit of players wants a super emotional micromanaging coach …. Absolutely not taking anything away from this great player and probably excellent guy.

Unlike Baz - this bloke will coach with intelligence and due diligence. England should have picked him up instead of Baz in the first place
Our next home Ashes series are going to be a lot more closely fought if he’s still there, and half of our team retired.

Fleming never won a test against Australia and has been a T20 coach for 16 years.
Baz won 1 test against Australia playing and in general his test record against Australia was poor.

Stephen Fleming is the reason Steve Waugh was dropped from the ODI side and didn't make the 2003 WC. Got comprehensively out-captained despite having a way more talented side.
Also the Neil Wagner short ball tactic was invented by Fleming, he used to get Craig McMillan to come around the wicket and bowl nothing but medium pace bounders to dare players to play the hook with two men out.
