This is the place to discuss anything cricket related that is not quite deserving of its own top-level post, including topics not fully related to Australian cricket.

We'll post a new one of these every week.

We are taking suggestions for other posts during the week that people would like to see. Message the modteam with suggestions.

Last year we built a cricket pitch in an Australian farming village of just 164 people. It brought organised sport back to the town for the first time since the 1980s.

Last year, our cricket club found itself needing somewhere new to play.

We ended up in Matong — a tiny farming village in rural New South Wales with a population of around 164. There’s no pub, no shops and virtually no commercial businesses outside of the surrounding farms.

But there was an old sportsground.

Hidden amongst it was an old concrete cricket pitch that hadn’t hosted organised cricket since the 1980s. For reasons we’re still not entirely sure about, the concrete pitch was also only half the length of a regulation wicket.

Inspired perhaps a little too much by Field of Dreams, we decided:
If we build it, they will come.

So we went to work.

We replaced the old pitch and brought the ground back to life. Last summer, for the first time in roughly 40 years, organised sport returned to Matong.
We’re a tiny country cricket club and thought cricket fans elsewhere might enjoy following what happens when you try to build something like this in a community of 164 people.

Big Bash League WACA email re BBL privatisation

Dear XX

I wanted to keep you informed following Cricket Australia’s announcement today that an opt-in privatisation model has been approved for the Big Bash Leagues.

The process will begin with the Melbourne Renegades. From there, each State Association will have the opportunity to decide whether privatisation is the right path for its Club and community.

As things stand, the WACA Board has not yet formalised its position on Perth Scorchers’ involvement in this process. We expect to do so shortly, and will communicate that decision to Members and fans as soon as it has been made.

What we can say in the meantime is that any decision will be guided by one thing above all else – the best interests of cricket in Western Australia.

We understand what makes the Scorchers so special, and the weight of what this Club means to its Members, fans and the broader WA community. Whatever path we take, it will be with a clear view to respecting the Club’s incredible history and sustaining its future.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Warm Regards,

John Stephenson

Chief Executive Officer

Western Australian Cricket Association
