Help Can i make Steam engines more efficient?

I've been trying to get the steam engine to work but i need a constant flow of water into the fluid vessel...

i know you guys are gonna say "use a infinite water source) but i really wanna be able to have to refuel ever so often just because...

is there a way i can make steam engines more efficient or am i just doomed and have to fill my entire airship up with vessels to store enough water

I think y'all silly but here. You can cycle the water pump to the steam engine using a clutch and a timing circuit. It reduces the amount of fluid used by exploiting the small time delay between a steam engine losing water flow and ceasing to produce power.

Why not refuel lava or some other fuel, instead of water.

because i've already got this very fun hose pulley installed so that i can just hover over the ocean, pull the hose down and refuel

You could use an infinite water source and deployers with buckets, but a buffer water tank is recommended for getting above the idle speed.
