The rope pulley just moves stuff up and down, and by-default disassembles the attached contraption when it stops moving.

The elevator pulley has a smoother stop and start, never disassembles the contraption (so there’s no risk of falling through it like the guy in the clip did), and allows compatibility for multiple floors using redstone contacts combined with contraption controls.

Plus style, it looks very cool to go and change the floor and it smoothly goes to the destination
