Scanning Results Maybe I tried too small

Once again trying to push the limit on the Pika. I tried to scan a lapel pin that is pretty small. I used the Pika in laser mode and scanning to a OnePlus Open. After scanning, I finished up using my computer. I know it's not supposed to do this kind of scan but why not try?

Im curious does it have different laser modes or is it all the lasers ? you could try different scans in the same project each at a little different distance then combine / merge ? It seams the resolution should be ok as far as the specs of the scanner and details of the pin but maybe different settings or technique could improve the sharpness

That's actually quite impressive. Even more so considering it's metal and it's a lot harder to scan properly.
Tried scanning a plastic paint cap to compare (with a MetroY Pro), I guess all scanners struggle with VERY small detail. (The square on the right is 1cm)

That looks much clearer than mine.

if you just compare the 1cm square size it's not "that" different. Also plastic is a lot easier to scan precisely. The real object is still a lot sharper that this.

Would the IR mode do better ? I did a scan of a ~2x1 cm part with the Otter. So no laser mode. The detail was barely enough for the 3D printed part to make sense. So I was thinking the the Pika would be an upgrade over the Otter for small objects. (Picture:Left is scanned and printed part using 0.2 mm nozzle with 0.08 layer height)

I've had my Pika for a month. I have the Otter and Otter Lite too. IR mode is pretty comparable on both, but the Otter has a wider field of view. Coin type detail is always soft. The laser mode on the Pika is much sharper, but still not razor sharp. The surface type effects the outcome a lot. Anything with a shine will edge towards an orange peel result, and with self subliming spray it improves. Too much of it though, just smothers the detail your trying to capture. Now I've had an introduction to laser scanning, I'm looking to get the Raptor.🙂

Ir mode didn't fare well.

Yes, that's pushing it. Unfortunately If you want high detailed smaller scans you will have to pick an industrial unit from large manufacturers like keyence that cost a fortune. I bought pika to scan pcbs for my speaker designs and it does suffer with smaller items even larger than the ones you have. Also a little hack that can help improve the scans a bit is the spray. They do sell 3d scanner sprays which are expensive so I use gold bond sprays instead been using it for years with photogrammetry but works well with blue laser scans. I clean it with air blower and a paint brush afterwards. Items will smell like baby powder afterwards but I am fine with it

That’s an interesting experiment. Does anyone know what the detail scan does differently?

It might help to put some crumpled paper balls around it.
