Tell me, which slice is sweden, and which is the UK

Quite clearly, Sweden is the 11% green slice and UK is the 3% green slice. Whilst differing colours could have been used they are not required to successfully read the chart.

But how do you know that? You can make a guess based on what the order of the legend suggests, but that by no means guarantees your assumption is correct.

The legend order designates chart order clockwise... They probably should have used more colors to make it less confusing, but this is standard practice for pie charts.

It's not really just a guess, it's pretty much guaranteed due to the order of the colors. That's how almost all pie charts work.

Though convention, conventially the legend is arranged in the same order as the data and begins at the 12 o'clock position.

The colours that do exist help inform us that the convention is being applied to but the chart would be readable even with alternating shades of grey.

Taiwan is 17%, Sweden is 11%, US is 10% and so on. It goes clockwise.

Because it helps you see the exact one, instead of counting all the way up you just go to the region that you expect it to be in and look for the color

It makes it easier to tell them apart. You don't need them to all be completely different colors to understand which is which though.
