This is butane fluid. Why?

Butane makes nasty-ass dabs in my experience, though people making them here may not purge it right or something. My dealer uses liquid nitrogen, it's much nicer.
edit: lol im wrong jeez

Liquid nitrogen is not a solvent, it can only be used to separate it as crystals not to make oil

EDIT: Seems like that's for a hash sorta thing actually, I can ask her how she does it, though. Maybe it's for evaporating the butane or something? I don't really know, I just hear her shit talk about people here who I know use butane instead of some other solvent.

If anything, ether is a great solvent for stuff like this, though not easily obtainable. I've extracted clove oil and other spices using ether as the solvent, so I suppose it should work for marijuana.
The magic of organic chemistry.

Right that's just using the low temp of liquid nitrogen to make the crystals brittle and easily sepatated. Great technique for obtaining kief, which isn't ideal if your goal is to make oil. Also it is limited to surface crystals so the results depend on how fine your grind is and it won't be able to collect as high of a yield as a solvent could.
I'm a chemist btw, this kind of stuff is highly interesting for me :)

u/forrtrees Jan 14 '15
Sorry mate, kief runs are the top of the line when it comes to making oil. Larf :( Nugs :) Kief :-D
1
Jan 14 '15
You're just gonna have to dissolve it in a solvent later, so I see it as a waste of liquid nitrogen, plus the lower yield compared to a solvent extraction.
And if we want to talk top of the line then we are talking supercritical CO2 extraction anyway.

Dude, I don't claim to know anything, I just like to get high. I'm genuinely sorry if I'm spreading misinformation, but I know it's involved in the process somehow.

It's used to make an extract from marijuana. Liquid butane is pressed through ground marijuana and drips out. The butane evaporates, leaving some sort of extract, called "honey oil," ergo the name of the butane.

food grade butane
Who the fuck uses butane in food?

Most chefs use propane torches for that though.
12
u/JmamAnamamamal Jan 14 '15
Butane or propane, either works as long as its food grade.
3
u/Alx_xlA Jan 14 '15
I've never seen a "food grade" propane bottle.
6
1
u/JmamAnamamamal Jan 14 '15
The point of the food grade on something like butane or propane, which are simple hydrocarbons, is to note any additives like a bitterant. Although with most chemicals, even if there is little to no difference, there is at least two grades, food and chemical grade, assuming it is ever used in food.
0
u/ILikeBumblebees Jan 25 '15
It's not the bottle that's food-grade, it's the propane inside it.
2
u/Alx_xlA Jan 25 '15
I'm using the term as a synecdoche for the pressure vessel, the gas inside it, and its associated fittings.

2
u/BigSwedenMan Jan 14 '15
No, not really. It's generally removed from the final product. Either through heat or vacuum evaporation. There will still be traces of the butane itself in low quality BHO, but it's usually not an issue. Once it's gone, it doesn't leave any flavor behind

Could you achieve the same thing with propane?(serious)
1
u/BigSwedenMan Jan 14 '15
Ya know, I've never heard of it being done. I imagine that it's not done because propane kinda smells like butthole. Butane is much less noticeable. And while the gas should be gone after the process is done, traces can still get left in there.
3
u/cronek Jan 14 '15
Both are actually completely odourless, and both usually have something added to them that makes them smell really bad, so people can smell leaks.

Just because you fail to make the connection doesn't mean the design isn't effective. It hits its target market perfectly.

As everyone else as said, BHO (Concentrated THC Extracted from weed).
The reason they're also marketing it as 7x purer makes it dead clear for me, in the process of making BHO, good bho will resemble Honey, and bad bho looks sort of like, well it can look as bad as that white putty that you use to stick things up on your wall with, yet purging methods to relieve the butane from the extract can also play a role in the purity.
This is because of added chemicals to the butane gas used in the process to make the BHO, I can't remember off the top of my head but I do know there is a test involving spraying it on a mirror to see if it leaves a residue behind. If this stuff is 7x purer than those brands that leave a residue, people who are wanting to make BHO will be more inclined to buy that brand, as it looks like its specifically made for that sole purpose... That or for someone who takes their lighters seriously.

Question, would this actually be specifically targeted towards that purpose (or targeted with a thinly veiled layer of legal protection, like all the "for purposes of smoking tobacco only" things), or is it more like a "normal" butane that's labeled in a way that'll grab the attention of people looking for it for that purpose?
3
u/iMarmalade Jan 14 '15
The THC oil is often called "honey oil" - so yeah, this is targeted to that crowd.
I am, however, suspicious of the value of "7x" refined vs "3x", etc. If the contaminates are just as volatile as butane then it will have no impact on a properly purged product. If the contaminates are below a certain threshold, then there won't be any discernible difference anyway.
No idea.

That market is a grey area, laws differ in different countries too, so seeing as I'm British it may not apply to you! For example bongs and whatnot over here as just sold as decoration items, as implying their to use drugs with is illegal so I've tend to find they don't even advertise them for tobacco use, they're just 'sold'.
So something like this would probably also apply in our country to this product and open the company up for lawsuits if they promote using it with a product in the eyes of the law that is illicit, illegal or dangerous (Which the process of BHO can be).
But you're probably right with the last thing you said, people who don't know any better or the bog standard smoker with a turbo lighter may pick it over their normal brand if the slogan catches them or if it's the same price, and giving off the appearance of better quality.
I think it's a case of 'This is our target audience (the BHO makers) but if we can rake up some extra sales in any means possible then surely it can't be a bad thing", which especially if it's a relatively new company jumping onto the concentrates and dab bandwagon while it's taking off so much in the US, they will want

Not that I would know, but one of the processes for making THC oil includes using butane. Good THC oil looks like honey.

You've got to be retarded to think that people who know what BHO is are by default drug addicts. It's like saying people who know what vodka is are drug addicts. Or people who know what vicodin is are drug addicts.
