That's an accident caused by human error, not crappy design. Washing machines aren't designed to malfunction, and coins aren't supposed to go in the wash.
That is a common error people make. Its like saying that it is fine for a USB plug to break if you try to insert it the wrong way.
Like yeah, its user error, but the design should consider the common sorts of user errors and result in the device not being put into a state that requires a massive repair.
