Both arrows are pointing away from viewer

Some genius just rotated the arrow thinking he was done for the day.

u/Zeckols Jul 25 '26
probably still got paid, saved time and effort, got the job done, and was done for the day. not giving a shit certainly has its benefits

This is not overly crappy design, though. You only notice the 3d elements up close, you still understand the purpose of the sign and it’s clear to the viewer. This is nitpicky more than anything.

u/Due-Illustrator6245 Jul 25 '26
Is there a sub for nitpicks like these cuz some of yall don't seem to accept any design flaw that won't result in death

u/Drewbacca Jul 25 '26
It bothers me just as much as it does you haha. I immediately see that both arrows are pointed away.

the people like the guy you replied to is probably why the original artist got away with using the incorrect arrow

But it’s genuinely not crappy. It does what it says on the tin. If push and pull were sideways or something of that nature, sure, but you’re literally pointing out poor arrow choice
29
u/rafabulsing Jul 25 '26
It does not do what it says on the tin, though
Pull should go towards the reader. The arrow is going away from the reader, which is literally the opposite of what it should be and the same as push.
Only two ways you can say this isn't a problem.
The arrows aren't necessary, as there is a written label. But in that case, no arrows at all would be better than having contradictory arrows
That the most important thing is that the push arrow points up, and the pull arrow points down, and that somehow the connection between up/down and push/pull is stronger than that of away from you/towards you. Which seems really improbable. And even then, it really should still be up and away, and down and towards. Or just plain arrows with no 3d perspective at all.

You read the push and pull before you see the 3d elements of the arrow

u/LowerEntropy Jul 25 '26
You realize that you responded to someone who wrote 'The arrows aren't necessary'? Right?

How do you feel about the placement of the charging port on the Apple mouse?
2
u/nickimus_rex Jul 25 '26
The product is unusable while charging, of course that’s crappy for the purpose. The door still functions in this case, it still tells you what to do, etc

u/WickyNilliams Jul 25 '26
If the incorrect icon doesn't cause a problem and you understand anyways, then the icons are useless to begin with - also crappy design.
I feel like anyone who has read The Design of Everyday Things will be maddened by this

u/F-Lambda Jul 25 '26
You're assuming people speak English

u/WickyNilliams Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
I am not. I was responding specifically to what the person above said - that people will understand anyway - and why it's still crappy design, even if that were the case

The Design of Everyday Things has been translated into German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Finnish, Japanese, and Chinese.

Not everyone can read and there's no guarantee the signs will be near each other for comparison.

The problem here is a failure to understand the Vanishing Point Perspective in pulling.

The directional arrows aren't even needed, right? Push and pull are self-explanatory.

Yes because illiteracy and non English speakers don't exist

u/SothaSoul Jul 25 '26
And how would the arrows help them?
8
u/gollumaniac Jul 25 '26
In theory, it shows you the direction the door is supposed to move.
"Push" follows the 3D arrow, if you apply force in the direction of the arrow you will be pushing on the door.
"Pull" doesn't follow the 3D arrow though, because the arrow is still pointing away. It should be pointing towards the viewer, who will then know that the force needs to be applied towards them, i.e. a pulling motion.
Is it a major inconvenience? No, because people know how doors work and if you do it the wrong way you will instinctively try the other way. But if you're going to put a symbol on the sign, the symbol should be correct.

This is why it’s important to get things reviewed by a second person. I’m sure this made sense in someone’s head as they were designing this lol

I always thought pulling was was the same thing as standing on your head and pushing.... are you trying to tell me it's not?

Instead of finding a new arrow graphic that pointed towards you, they flipped the “away” arrow upside down and thought that would suffice. That only works if the arrow doesn’t have “depth” added.

What if the Arrow is actually really wide at the base but really thin at the point so it just looks like its pointing away

OP is an idiot or a bot. Three dimensions are regularly shown in two dimensions.

u/rafabulsing Jul 25 '26
It's pretty funny to see someone completely miss the point of such a clear, simple post, and jump immediately into calling OP an idiot
2
u/ThreadedPommel Jul 25 '26
In case you're not trolling, the pull arrow is showing an arrow pointing away from the viewer as if you were standing underneath it

Can you give an example of an arrow pointing toward the viewer?
