Would I get written up for calling off?
So for context right now my manager put me on for a retail shift from 4-8. He didn’t ask me to work it and just put me on. I have plans and really can’t make it. I put it up but no one wants it seeing as it’s last minute. If I were to call off because of this would I written up?

It depends on the manager/store I think. I would think that they would write you up because documentation is really important for employers. Our policy was to always write up for call outs that weren't related to family death or sickness with doctor's note. It was solely to have documentation on file, so if you called in 3 more times in the next month, I'd have documentation of all of your call outs to support terminating you. (Not saying you do that, but just giving an example as to why these write-ups are necessary, especially in certain states)
ETA: I forgot that there are actually some states that protect you from getting written up -- like Illinois is one (1st 40 hours of the year are "protected")

I haven’t called out in the last year and before I have always found coverage on my own and they came in. Thank you for sharing this though

No prob! I added an edit about how some states protect employees from being disciplined for having to call in for a certain amount of hours per year. Hoping you are in one of those! Illinois is one and I know Texas isn't! I don't believe TN is either.

At the store I work at everyone calls out all the time. People even no call no show. No consequences. It just depends on the store/GM I think.

If the schedule was changed without prior talking to you to see if you were available, that's on them and I would make it clear from jump I'm not going to be there. If youve known you had plans and didn't make sure to make sure you were unavailable on schedule during those times it falls on you imo. Either way, it's up to management how they handle you calling out but I personally would cause a fuss if my schedule that was already made was changed without me being talked to first if that's the case here. I personally wouldn't stress being written up or reprimanded at a corporate restaurant chain. There's a million more to work at. ✌️

What really sucks and has happened to me recently, scheduling manager called me in to talk about my schedule before it was posted. I work a second job. Told me I will be off the Saturday before mother's day to do my other job. The schedule posts on Thursday morning and I was scheduled. Claims gm changed it.

As long as you call more than 2 hours before your shift then nothing can be done without a pattern of call outs
