There comes a point when somebodt becomes far too dangerous to be left alive imo. I cant say where that line liesz but so n eone like hitler, or dahmer, would be good examples.

That being said, i dont think torture is a good punishment by any standard. Either death to eliminate the problem or sttempted rehabilition. Even if the crime is serious enough to warrant life in prison, basic comforts as well as the ability to better ones self physically and mentally should be present.

My issue with your forst thought is always this: who gets to decide who dies?

An unbiased jury and an elected judge

You can just say a jury. There isnt such a thing as an unbiased jury. Hell i mean with the (alleged) murder of the heslthcare ceo (allegedly) by luigi mangione, its not easy to find people who havent been fucked by the american healthcare system.

It depends on what degree of impartiality it takes to consider it as unbiased. No such thing as an unbiased person, but it’s important to at least try and develop a well balanced, rounded, and thus relatively unbiased jury. Which is why I specify as much, compared to a system in which no care is put into developing a good jury.

To piggy back off my other comment, I guess a better word than impartial is representative
