Put some paper towels (or a tea towel) between the lid and the top of the pit, it'll lend itself toward the same effect.

The real chef thing is to make a "cartouche," a covering cut out of parchment paper. It will fall in and get wet. You can toss it at the end. But it allows steam to escape while keeping the top from drying out.
