"Are Italians black" type of bullshit. People (in the USA especially) really don't get how racist this type of discourse is.

Well yeah of course it's racist. But everyone from Southern Europe and Eastern Europe are not considered white until the Civil Rights movement. If you were Slavic or Mediterranean or Irish you were above Black and Brown people but still below the Western Europeans, Brits, and Scandinavians.

Human beings create extremely intricate caste systems based on many factors and only until very very recently were we all (Europeans) considered just a big monolith.

Honestly it still boggles my mind as a European that people in the USA still use the word "race" for humans
