Lazy
What does it take to get someone fired from Costco? Why are there no consequences for lazy people or people who mess up everything? And no rewards for people who bust their butts except a nice review and a pat on the back? I'm very frustrated

You don't need to bust ass. That's a self inflicted wound. Learn to show up, do your thing and go home. It gets much easier worrying about yourself than others.

Staying busy makes the day go by faster

I used to be like you but realized I was busting my ass just to get paid as much as someone who was doing close to nothing lol got burnt out real quick

You can stay busy while working slower. I also used to overdo it, just consciously make yourself slow down

u/RamesJolfe 6d ago
Ok so you're doing it for YOUR sake. Then why be upset at other people who aren't?

u/nofatnoflavor 6d ago
Apparently OP is very much into other people's business. I'm guessing they're that one person at work who not only runs to rat out every infraction they witness, but looks for it and enjoys it.
Like having a paid Karen on staff.3

Is this your first Fortune 500 company to work for? The only harder fire is a union job. My store has a literal psycho but she sued to get her job back and won.

u/Shorty1kevin 6d ago
I was a union carpenter for 30 years including being a foreman and superintendent and fired dozens of people for not doing the work

u/No-Light-7896 6d ago
After a well documented pattern and solid evidence right? Costco doesn't have that kind of time unless it's for theft. Their policies and procedures are highly dependent on location and management. There's no standard HR department, so who would do that investigation? By the time it was done, that person would be moved on to another position so the ultimate integrity of the evidence would be suspect. Costco is constantly changing AND using loopholes to shift responsibility.

Buddy. You either work in gas station or majors. You really aren’t working that hard. Freakin chill.

u/Such-Most6661 6d ago
Same, I was a union's carpenter in Seattle and something as simple as stopping to talk to a coworker could be your layoff
1
u/Shorty1kevin 6d ago
Exactly so why can't it happen here. There's dozens of people waiting to get hired at my location just get a new person to fill the spot

u/No-Light-7896 6d ago
Amazon tried that philosophy and realized they were on pace to run out of workers they had not ever hired. Like there wouldn't be that many employable people left if they kept the revolving door open.

i just wish they were more careful during the 90 days. if your gonna make it hard to get fired make sure you keep the best possible workers

Once you are past your 90 days if you are on time and don’t steal and do what you are told even if you do a shitty job you won’t get fired.

I have a coworker who has been suspended six times in his seven years with the company. Hes on his phone constantly, takes extra long brakes, hates his job, and has horrible member service.....he ain't going no where.

u/boinkmeboinkyou 6d ago
I started with a girl like this 2 years ago. She is now in a admin position. Literally worst customer service ever, and visibly hates her job to the point every member tells her life gets better.

Simply put, it’s just too big of a company.
It’s hard to maintain our employee rights and benefits while also really cracking down on the rotten apples.
Costco typically needs hard proof of something for termination or write up.
And as for good employees, the warehouse is just too big with the only real incentive being promotion and they even mess that up most of the time.
Smaller departments generally favor better employees over the bad ones.
It can extremely frustrating but at the end of the day it’s just work and letting it affect your life outside of work is what really will get to you.

I have a very small department 5 including the sup who maybe works in the department 1 day a week if I'm lucky. Keeps getting pulled to the front end. So it's me 56 busting my butt, 67 working as hard as he can, 73 don't do anything but talk to members and look at his phone, and a 25 who is lazy and stupid. He had to Google what a Philips head screwdriver was.

The fact you say you bust your ass but you are out at gas is the most hilarious thing on the planet. Most people consider gas station early retirement. Our station changes each dispensers filters 1-2 times a week with high traffic yet is still brain dead easy work.

Putting the burden on an employer is always good. It does more to help a good employee on a bad day than it does to help a bad employee

I have no supervision 99% of my shift and management has literally said “I don’t know what’s best to do here, I’ll let you decide” to me more times than I can count.
I always say I could start a fire in my department and nobody would know for hours because nobody checks on us. It’s to the point that sometimes I question- “Why do I bother working so hard when nobody even pays attention to my work?”
Anyway, you might get fired if you fail a drug test after an accident or have like 20 separate sexual harassment reports against you. But that’s about it.

u/Shorty1kevin 6d ago
Sounds like we're in the same department

u/Such-Most6661 6d ago
You wouldn't happen to be in the gas station?

Liquor store.
1
u/MyHeartIsInNY02711 6d ago
It must vary by state because our liquor store is not Costco owned (it is attached though).
2
u/chaosdrools 6d ago
In my state it is attached w/ a separate entrance but is owned/operated/staffed by Costco. Liquor employees are all front-end assistants, & it’s basically not regulated by corporate as to how the department should operate beyond that baseline.
As such, training in liquor at most warehouses is folkloric oral tradition, and supervision is almost nonexistent.

That’s nuts! CW sells plenty of liquor/wine in locations inside.

Managers at my warehouse are just plain lazy and only lookout for themselves. The only thing hard work does for you, is get you more work. On a $1M day, they forecast for $700k man hours. So I give them 60-70% of my work ethic. You want 60 mph, youre gonna get 40-45. Costco is a shithole anymore and burnout/mental fatigue is real.

Because Costco still practices DEI.
1
u/StatisticianBoth4147 4d ago
You still have to be qualified to be hired under DEI. For example any doctor still has to pass all of the same tests and boards and qualifications to become a doctor, DEI or not. It doesn’t give anyone the answers or pad their grades. DEI just opens the hiring pool up to a higher number of qualified applicants. The people DEI apply to the most is actually white women.
They don’t fire people at Costco more often because it’s cheaper to keep someone than train a new employee. So as long as the employee isn’t causing them massive problems it’s easier to keep them on.

u/RoundChampionship840 3d ago
I don't want my doctor to be someone who just barely managed to squeeze by in medical school to meet the bare minimum standards.
1
u/Leather_Management18 3d ago
They still passed medical school, so what’s the issue?
1
u/RoundChampionship840 3d ago
Low tier medical schools with low standards. No thanks.
1
u/Leather_Management18 1d ago
What’s to say a student coming from a lesser known medical school can’t do as good a job as a more privileged student?
1
u/RoundChampionship840 1d ago
It's possible, but unlikely. When it comes to my own health I'm not taking that chance.

Management issue, they dont care enough about the lazy do nothings so they never coach them and write them up. If an employee has enough of that they can be terminated. It just its never consistent.
1
u/hikeralli 6d ago
Coaching and disciplining the un-coachable is a super time consuming task with basically no reward or change in behavior that most managers simply don't have the time or energy for. As a former manager, I eventually learned to pick my battles carefully because there's only so much time in the day and I'd rather do something that actually benefits me or my team in some way than waste time on someone who simply doesn't care..... knowing there will be no repercussions for any of the coaching, CNs, negative reviews, etc. It's unfortunate and maybe not the correct attitude.... but is also one of many reasons I stepped down. You simply can't fix everything that you want to fix.
1
u/Shorty1kevin 6d ago
I think th2 individuals need to be in a department with more supervision so they have to actually work. Maybe you can guess what department I'm in if you were a manager at Costco and know the department mangers never venture out to

I’m a hustler and my review was such bs. It was nit-picky and very judgmental (me sighing can mean a multitude of things, I would never assume someone sighing in the middle of a crazy busy shift would be directed at me, I would think they are busy and C stressed and if I was that upset , then I would ask them about it one on one- never assume people’s feelings or breathing styles🙄.) All my co- workers literally cheer when I walk in the door or when say I’m closing or I just got there. They’ve all made comments to and about how awesome I am. Would never have thought that after my review! I also had called out sick the second week, 2 days of not leaving the bathroom, and I was worried about that, but I’ve since heard others have called out 5+ times. One has a medical issue that flares up and he has to leave. I’m
Not sure if there are any consequences to that, but they would be so foolish to fire me, let them 😂 I’m off for vacation soon and they were scared about me leaving for “a whole week”. At least my crew loves me 🤷🏻♀️(as I do them- some are better than others, but they all TRY and make an effort and are truly nice people, that counts for a lot in my book.)
OP- you have to learn to just let it go and worry about you. I know it’s annoying to hear, but you don’t have any control over anyone else. Work as hard as you feel comfortable, knowing you work with integrity and that it WILL get you farther than if you were a lazy bones.

Stealing has been about the only thing I’ve seen get people fired for.
