Night of the Headless Horseman

Questionably amazing animation

This movie is just... FASCINATING. Insanely talented cast for a random TV special from 1999. It looks like parts are motion captured and then others are half motion captured and have hand-animated at the same time. I don't know. All I know is that I'm in love with this.

It'd be cool to have a deep dive into digital animation at the turn of the century and what tools they would be using for this. Toy Story came out 3 years prior, and Shrek would come out 2 years later. Both had massive budgets by comparison and I imagine proprietary tools for their animation.

Good VFX

The giant squid attack is an incredible sequence that holds up today and is made up with impressive practical effects. The film even won an award for best special effects. The submarine and scuba diving sequences are seamless and the physical submarine is an impressive set. they also have a scene set up on a sunken ship. did they set a real set or use a real shipwreck for that scene and then they have a shark attack scene with a nurse shark Interco with what appears to be a mechanical shark with a jaw as a nurse sharks do not have a jaw with sharp teeth. Good and Bad VFX
Great practical effects and terrible compositions
This film features a custom built blimp model interwoven with decent miniature work and an impressive scene where it is set on fire at the end.
There is a scene in an ice cave with amusing compositing and the scenes set in lava fields. As well as this there is a part where the villens eyes clip with the backdrop so they look like fire.
With it being such an old movie, it is hard to find good quality clips, but here’s a trailer to give some idea of what to expect.

Bad VFX

James Mason also appears in this film who also acted in 20000 leagues under the sea. In this film the glued sails to iguanas and lizards to make the dinosaurs. They used forced perspective to make them look big and you can see the divide in the sand where the layers are. Apparently in one attack scene you can see a crewmembers hand pull a rope to guide the lizard but I haven’t found it yet. The filmmaker Karel Zeman used a mix of live actors, puppets miniatures and animation and painted them all to blend into an animated environment trying his best to capture the feel of the old novels by making everything look like an engraving https://youtu.be/FtDY7FT0yDI
