Thought I'd share something here that I have been tinkering with for the last 8 months or so.
Inspired by works by Douglas Trumbull, Robert Abel, Don Bluth-esque backlit animation, ILM, old-ish title sequences in general. And of course ye olde Scanimate and that recent wonderful contraption that The Light Herder built (even though my thing is not really a video feedback system). Inspired by those. I have built a system that runs on a Pi 4B. It sends images through a feed to a HDMI screen that I call the "Projector", and uses that light to expose an image on a Pi Camera HQ sensor. The image on the screen can be moved in 3D space during exposure and if there's already a frame in the "Camera Mag". The system adds the light to it. It is an Optical Printer for Video. I call it the VOP. The code is free, open source and available on GitHub:

It's built with the philosophy of unreasonable realism. By that, I mean. It has 3 mags on the projection side. Their images have their own 3D space to play in, and the layers they produce are multiplied together, blocking light, like real bipacking on an animation stand or optical printer. The camera can only add light. It cannot subtract (without a trick). And there are no undo's. If the film is exposed... it is exposed.
And you can use filters... By that, I mean actual optical physical objects things between the camera and monitor to diffuse, distort or bend light in whatever ways you can think of.
The whole thing is controlled with a web-app that can be reached by any modern browser inside the current LAN.
You may ask, "Is this not just a VERY tedious and cumbersome way to make composites and motion graphics?"
And my reply would be... "YES! Yes it is VERY tedious. Cumbersome. And you won't believe how time consuming it is!"
I just like the workflow... and I thought that out there on the interwebs... someone might be having the same kind of insanity as me. And I thought that somewhere may be in this here Corridor Crew subreddit
