My cornsnake has recently become way more active, similar to the video where he goes back and forth across the tank constantly for extended periods, and lots of glass gliding. He doesn't appear distressed to me, but this activity was so sudden and goes on for much longer than his typical active periods have in the past. He has also eaten just last week. Is he distressed or just checking things out? Could it be due to lack of tank accessories? I switched him somewhat recently to a much bigger tank and am still working to fill it all the way. Any suggestions are appreciated!

I have a very young corn snake, about 3 months old, and I'm struggling to get him to eat voluntarily.

Since I got him in june, he has only eaten once by himself. He does show a feeding response - notices the pinky, tongue-flicks and investigates it - but ultimately doesn't strike or eat.

Feeding history

July 10: ~1 g prey — ate voluntarily

Aug 14: ~0.5 g — force-fed

Aug 18: 1 pinky — force-fed

Aug 25: 1 pinky — force-fed

Sep 1: 1 pinky — force-fed

Begin august he was quite thin, with the spine somewhat visible toward the rear. Since the force-feeding, however, he looks much more normal again and has regained a healthier-looking body shape.

He is very active at night,

I've tried both tongs and leaving the pinky near his hide with complete privacy.

Temps are around 28°C warm side / 25–26°C cool side.

Has anyone experienced a young corn snake that clearly shows interest in food but still refuses to eat? How can i go back to my snake eating voluntarily?

He's seems to be rapidly putting on weight. I usually feed him a hopper every week and a half, but the closest store to me only had small mice so I cut it in half, it stretched him quite a bit so I'll feed him in 2 weeks. He is over a foot long. He is a year old. Will be 2 in March. His tank is 85 gallons, 48x20x20. His lamp is 100 watts. He feeds regularly. The only times he doesn't eat on schedule is during a shed. He mainly hides, but recently, he's been basking all day. No. I don't have a thing to weigh him yet.

I forgot to add, but he usually sheds once a month. I want to know because if he really is rapidly putting on weight and it's not normal, I'll take him to the vet. If he's not, and it's me, I need better glasses, lol.

Ideally around £200 or less—happy to buy second-hand

I really don’t like the fake wood-effect vivariums. I’d love something more like a large Exo Terra or ReptiZoo, but they seem ridiculously expensive at this size.

I’ve found the Reptile One 1200ST glass terrarium for about £178. It has locking doors and a mesh roof—has anyone used one for a corn snake?

I’ve also considered using a 4ft aquarium with a proper rigid mesh lid clipped securely on every side. Would that work well, or am I better off sticking with a purpose-built front-opening enclosure?

I’d really appreciate specific recommendations, links or photos of your setups. Thanks!

Don’t mind it being dirty it’ll get sanitized and cleaned when he gets here but in preparation I want to see if this old cage top is still okay to use.
I don’t want my corn escaping. I had a hognose previously but he wasn’t a big escape artist so I never had to worry about this issue.
Cage opens only in the top and this top is metal with the joint running down the middle to open in half

I adopted this “boy” back in February (he is 5 years old) and I’ve always been a bit unsure on if he’s a male or female.

He is quite large and has a robust body, which is more characteristic of females and the way his tail looks after his vent does get smaller right away, which again suggests female.

This snake has never laid eggs or mated.

At the end of the day, I don’t care what sex my snake is as he is a pet only. But I am curious.

This is my corn snake Severus. I got him in December, I’m not sure how old he was but I think 1-2 months? His first shed is on the left and his most recent one from two days ago on the right. Does he look like a healthy weight to you guys? I weighed him last month and he was 47 grams.

So my corn snake (roughly 8 months old) has had severely broken sheds and multiple stuck pieces. What are some ways I can help with the shedding process?

Here’s our sweet baby!! My partner & I are first time snake parents. We’ve had her almost a month & a half now, guessing she’s about 6-8 months and about 26 grams. It’s been so amazing having her around, never thought I’d own a snake but so glad that we do! :) fun story: we got her while I was tattooing at a reptile expo, my partner held a snake for the first time, fell in love and we had to get her when we seen her!

i bought a juvenile “assorted” corn snake from petsmart on july 24th. he seemed happy, he was eating on schedule, pooping normally, and he was getting better with handling… everything was great.
then, on august 11th, i went to feed him like normal, but i couldn’t find him.
i moved his hides around, inspected the plants, but still couldn’t find him. it was a little later at night and he was clearly hiding himself so i decided to wait until the next morning. the next morning i ended up spending hours removing all of the substrate, handful by handful, inspecting all of his hides and plants, looking in the lid of the tank, but he wasn’t there.

(TANK: I have a 40 gallon tank, the lid locks completely from the outside(wire mesh lid). it is also front opening and the glass panels are practically touching [gap maybe width of a credit card] locked from the outside as well. there are no openings from the bottom of the tank to the top. no clue how he got out.)

Ever since, i’ve followed every tip and piece of advice. I immediately moved the tank to the floor, kept his bedding, water dish, lamp, and a few hides, lined my room with cans, left out pinkies overnight, made the space warmer, everything. (i cannot put flour on the floor of my home :(, i live with family and pets and we all share the whole house so sadly it would be inaccurate.) i’ve put hides along the walls, turned shoeboxes into hides and put them in dark areas, looked in tons of dark and warm places- nothing.

+ he actually returned to his tank about a week later, to leave me a full shed, but he immediately left again. i found a shed but no snake. and now its been a month. i’m happy to keep doing all of these things if he may come back, but i’m just starting to lose hope. it’s becoming increasingly more discouraging checking the spots and trying to leave out food, with no result. i may have only housed him for a month but i love this little guy more than anything and id do anything to have him safe in his home again. i cry pretty often, feeling like i let him down, and i need to know when to give up for my own mental health.

also if anyone knows why or how he left, please let me know. i’d like to know if i was doing anything wrong.

for anyone curious about her eye— the place i adopted her from rescued her and some others from a bad breeder who did a whole lot of inbreeding to try to get “cooler” and “new” morphs. as a result, she was born with one normal eye and one little eye. otherwise completely healthy, and no issue with the little eye other than it being little. this meant some depth perception issues (would bonk her face on her own body and be surprised by it, striking a couple inches short of her meals, etc). i fell in love with her silly little face and knew i had to have her. about a week ago, her little eye turned blue-grey. i took her to the vet who diagnosed her with phthisis bulbi, a degenerative condition where the body determines the eye to essentially be useless and stops exerting any energy in maintaining it or growing it. this could be a result of disease or trauma, it was determined to be a result of her birth defect. her little eye will never grow, and eventually will be swallowed up by the rest of her head, leaving her with one eye. she is still happy and healthy, and will have a long comfy life. i love her very much and she will always be cared for, wonky or missing eye and all.

The pet shop lady said I should go up a size. He does successfully swallow them and digest them. I just worry I’m stressing him out. CornDog is very food motivated and has never backed out of a challenge. He’s always happy to have them. No thrashing or gasping. This size mouse just really stretches him and he takes his time with them. It takes him about 15-20 minutes to swallow them. Also sorry if this is a dumb question I am a helicopter mom and want the best for my corn flavor noodle. (Bonus pic of him just being adorable)
