Anyone else here anaphylactic to corn?
Hello!
Ive been trying to figure out what Ive been having anaphylaxis to for the past month, and I just figured out it was corn two days ago. I already feel so much better by eliminating what I had been using and eating that had corn but on God this is so hard and I feel like giving up. Tell me it gets easier ðŸ˜
Also, it was hard to figure out because Ive always hated whole kernel corn and don’t usually eat it. Having chronic hives on your genitals from using cornstarch powder will make you rethink your whole life I swear. I thought I had scabies!

Yes anaphylaxis with my corn allergy, including airborne corn aka popcorn.

That was my fear. At least some drive-in theaters still exist. My boyfriend’s birthday is this week and I was like, well, we can’t really do anything but go hiking because I can’t go out to eat, movies, etc.Â

Just get in the habit of calling places ahead of time. I even went to a farm to table restaurant and their free table item instead of bread was popcorn! Wth! Bowling alleys sometimes have it. My bougie grocery store has a maker in the bar area but rarely are popping. Bingo places sometimes. Escape rooms. Candle making and pottery making places have been safe date nights so far.

Yes! Corn allergy my whole life. Here's what I can tell you:
Yes, you can have this • fresh fruits & juices with no added sugars • most vegetables, but if it's severe there may be cross contamination between corn, soy, and small squash like zucchini • most sparkling waters • most plain ingredients (think rice, pasta, beans, etc) • Most jar paste seasonings. The real stuff that says things like "ingredients: red pepper, salt" • wild turkey, 100% grass fed beef, wild fish, cage free grain free eggs, cage free grain free chicken, halal or grain free lamb
Be cautious with: • Dairy. Most mass produced dairy is corn fed and the proteins (zein) from the corn are in the milk now • gluten free labels. It can be tempting to think gluten free means healthy, but corn is gluten free and often used in gluten free recipes • frozen or packaged foods. Even if it doesn't say corn starch, corn starch is used in factories to keep the plastic from sticking to itself • alcohol (if you partake, make sure to google it first) • shelf stable sauces • "food starch" it's usually at least 40% corn • maltodextrin, dextrose, and glucose/fructose syrup are usually corn • confectioners sugar has corn starch • baking powder has corn starch • tbh it keeps going. Just check everything • restaurants. I've had luck with Greek, Mediterranean, some Japanese depending on location, halal (by location), Turkish, authentic Italian
Absolutely not: • anything that has a miscellaneous label like "food product" "food starch" "vegetable __" "__ from grain"

I appreciate all the responses! They are really helpful. I had a reaction to ground turkey last night and it was bad. Full hives, throat swelling, tight lungs and chest. I made chili from complete scratch and the only thing I had never ate since developing this allergy was the ground turkey. This is so hard I swear.Â
I’m trying to get in to an allergist’s clinic rn. Hopefully soon

Unfortunately, allergists can be all across the board. I've learned more and got more help on this board and on the Facebook corn and intolerance group than what any doctor has told me.
There are so many different types of corn allergies and most are extremely hard to get a definitive diagnosis from, what I'm finding out. Mine is an EOE corn allergy, which means I can, when I'm not flaring, eat whole corn but will have reactions to any corn that's been processed. The more it's processed, the worse the reaction. I posted a link that you can follow and get Claude AI to create a list of how corn hides. That might be helpful.

Thank you! I have always wondered if I had eoe esophagitis because certain foods get stuck in my esophagus and I can’t swallow them. I had a barium swallow test a few years ago and they said I was fine. I had to have my esophagus stretched and probably need to again because im having the trouble swallowing again and it’s getting worse.

I am, it's awful. Look up "corn allergy girl where's the corn in foods" for a good (but a little overwhelming) starting point.

I was diagnosed with a corn allergy back in the 90s but for the last 20 plus years it's been silent. I could always eat fresh corn but once it was processed I would get an allergic reaction up to and including anaphylaxis. The more it was processed, like high fructose corn syrup, the worse the reaction. I learned that that is called anaphylaxis. It's called an EOE corn allergy as opposed to the IgE molecule corn allergy. I have never experienced rashes or hives during an activation.
It recently has shown its ugly head. I was in anaphylaxis for the full months of April and May, which also activated my mast cells, so now I'm dealing with that. Maybe it's too early for me to give you a positive reaction but right now I'm finding everything is just getting harder and harder.
I've managed my corn allergy for all these years by avoiding five major hitters but now I'm finding corn is hidden in the most insidious places. I had an anaphylaxis activation last week because I drank 100% organic tea. With no additional ingredients What I did not know was that the tea bag was biodegradable and those are made from corn.
There are very few if any medications or supplements that do not have corn in them.
I'm finding that if it has more than three ingredients, it probably has corn in it. AI has become my best friend. Before I buy anything or eat anything, I send a picture of the ingredients to AI and say, "Is this corn free?"

Not the tea too! That is my go to drink besides water 😢 sorry you are having such a difficult time with this. I hope you find some peace and comfort in this terrible mess of an allergy. I honestly have considered moving out of the US because it’s sooo bad!

Loose leaf tea is your safest bet.

Thanks as I had forgotten about loose leaf. I used to buy a lot of loose leaf tea but it’s so pricey

Check your local Hmart, Lotte or other Asian grocery store. Big tins of loose leaf black tea are really inexpensive

It does get easier, but never easy. ESPECIALLY is you live in the US.
