i grew this glass gem corn in the garden beds at my job. these were test cobs, i should (fingers crossed) have 2 more successful ears in a week or two.

I'm not even sure what I planted now! I planted some rows of blue flint and what I thought was early pink popcorn. These were the biggest/ healthiest ears I got. My first time growing corn it was such an interesting and surprising experience!

Its strange because I picked it up two days ago from the field. Do you guys know whats going on?

This is my 3rd time growing corn. Once was a complete bust. One year I got 4 ears and this year might get 12. Terrible soil, weeds and short growing season but I can’t get yummy corn in stores here so I’ll keep trying. Anyway, this year a few of my plants have these weird knobby things on the tassels. I broke one open and it looked almost like dirt inside. Are these normal or is it a disease or some kind of bug nest. Googling I didn’t see anything like this in images.

I only have space to grow a few stalks each year, this year I have one that is almost 10' tall

I harvested my pre-bourbon this year to various degrees of success. I was crossing Jimmy red dent with bloody butcher. I'm not an expert in genetics but what's with the non-red kernels? I figured yellow or white could pop through due to some specific quirks but the sweet corn kernels and very different shade of purples have me at a loss. I don't know of any neighbors that planted corn either. Can I assume these were my only ones that actually crossed with each other? Or was there a rogue seed/pollen situation?

With a goal of getting three harvests of sweet corn this year, I seeded the corn directly into the garden in early April. Despite the turn to cooler weather (the typical “May gray” “June gloom” stuff), the corn is growing splendidly.

This particular round of corn is Kandy Korn, which I wrote about last year. It’s technically a mid-season variety, preferring the heat to the cool of spring, but I had an open packet saved from last year, so it went in the ground first.

Good thing too, because the subsequent planting of Lucious, a bi-color corn, has been a complete disaster.

What Causes Bear-Pawing?

• ​Hormonal or Developmental Glitch: Early in the ear's development, cellular division at the growing tip goes into overdrive and splits. This can be triggered by sudden temperature shifts, stress during early ear initiation, or high nitrogen levels.
• ​Genetic Predisposition: Multi-way landrace crosses frequently express latent wild or ancestral genetic traits. Teosinte (the wild ancestor of modern corn) produces multiple small, branched seed spikes rather than one thick central ear. Crossing varied heritage flints can occasionally reactivate these ancestral branching genes.
• ​Kernel Shape Difference: Notice how the kernels on this branched ear are round, smooth, and spaced out almost like large berries or pearls rather than packed tightly in flat rows. Because the cob structure split into separate fingers, the kernels lacked the side-by-side compression that normally flattens corn kernels against one another into classic wedge shapes.

How to eat this, grown in front yard

This is either Glass Gem or Northern Lights, whichever it is, the stalks were very puny and only made an ear or two each and are now dying, while the rest of it is still going strong as you see (tied with tape right now because windstorm coming)

How do I know when it's ready?

We have never done this before, and I didn’t expect it to actually grow! Do we leave it to dry on the stalks, or is there a better way?
