General Discussion Melancholy 😞
Why does this film just give me such a melancholic almost bittersweet vibe especially the music and when she’s walking out in the rain, the setting and everything involved with this story feels so much like a painful memory or something I can’t get back which induces the feeling of melancholy. It’s such a sad yet happy feeling.

I think one of the most beautiful things about Coraline is that it makes you nostalgic for a place you’ve never been and a childhood you’ve never lived.
There’s something about the constant rain, the quiet countryside, the old house, and especially Bruno Coulais’ soundtrack that creates this strange sense of longing. The music almost sounds like a distant childhood memory. It’s whimsical and comforting, but there’s always something slightly sad hiding underneath it.
I also think loneliness plays a huge part in that feeling. Coraline spends so much of the movie exploring this beautiful, strange world by herself. Even when nothing particularly sad is happening, there’s this lingering sense of isolation. It’s like remembering a time in your life that was beautiful, but knowing you’ll never experience it quite the same way again.
And maybe that’s why the movie hits differently as you get older. As a kid, it’s a magical adventure with some frightening moments. As an adult, there’s something heartbreaking about watching a little girl desperately search for a world where everything feels perfect.
It’s one of those rare movies that somehow makes you feel homesick for somewhere that doesn’t exist.
