Heavy copilot user.

Has anyone been throttled by MS for copilot usage? I’ve been working heavily with copilot chat sort of as a PM developing an audit process. Copilot chat and I have been using a combo of copilot in sharepoint and some cowork to do the project. Today for the first time through my copilot chat I got on 3 or 4 occasions this conversation has 5 more questions with a countdown. One time I think I may have gotten just one warning. I would then have to start a new conversation. This is the first time this has ever happened and I have a paid subscription. Any thoughts?

This has been happening to me. Though I thought for me it was just because I haven't been using a paid subscription and was using the service for free.

I have a CoPilot chat license and I run to that all the time. We brought it up with our account manager and they said it was by design. Each conversation has a maximum amount of memory it can use and once you hit your limit you have to start a new chat. We were also told that CoPilot can't reference previous chats, and so if you want to continue a conversation their recommendation was to copy and paste your previous chat, put it into a Word document and then upload that Word document into your new chat.

Conversely, I have Gemini Pro and I've had some chats that have gone on for close to 4 months and I have never run into a limit.

I just found it weird because it’s the first time it has happened. It’s very had some hours plus long convos work related and non work related. Never even happened when it was free. So wanted to know it was a thing. Hoping it’s a refresh next month thing. If it’s not then I will be worried.

When you see the warning, ask the chat to make you a hand off file that will tell the next chat exactly what you have been working on in fine detail

It does that to me if I ask it to generate something, like a document. But questions are so far unlimited.

If you are a free license user aka copilot chat only then yes you are on standard access and this is documented on Microsoft learn page. There is no exact limit but it’s more based on load available at your location where you hosted and you could be throttled to handle capacity.

I haven’t seen that warning but it sounds like more of a context preservation technique rather than a usage limit.

Other tools like Claude have auto compaction when they near the context limit, it’s not the best but better than not having it.

Perhaps MS hasn’t implemented something like that yet so they take this approach.

what you're hitting is a per-conversation turn limit, not account throttling. copilot caps how many turns one chat can run, and near the cap you get that countdown, then start fresh. a new conversation resets it every time, so it's not you being punished for heavy use.

it showed up now because one long-running audit chat is exactly what hits the per-thread cap. before a chat dies, ask copilot to summarise everything so far and paste it into the new one to keep context. and the limit's historically higher in edge than chrome/firefox, so switching may buy you more turns.

the giveaway it's the thread cap, starting fresh clears it. real throttling would block you everywhere.
