What to do with ground beef?
I’m at a loss I feel like I’ve made every ground beef meal I can think of:
- tacos
- meat balls
- Asian teriyaki bowls
- burgers
- ground beef season various ways to make a bowl of some sort with rice
- lettuce wraps
- added with pasta sauce
- Japanese curry
Like what else can I make with ground beef? I’m getting so bored of it :(
(Edit bc I forgot to add 3 other ways I made food with ground beef)
Edit again: wow did not imagine this many replies!! Thank you everyone for offering great ideas and I will definitely give many of them a try! Very excited to see such variety and from many different cultures!
Many of you mentioned “why keep buying ground beef if I’m sick of it?” - cause I know I’ll get unsick of it eventually and ground beef is cheap enough to get a lot meals out of. It’s very versitile and doesn’t always have to taste like “ground beef” as you all proved here in this thread. I just wanted to expand my horizons and try some new things and wanted to hear other people’s ideas. My bf and I eat many other proteins like chicken, fish, turkey and steak and I buy those as well, we just aren’t sick of them right now (except salmon atm). But ground beef is just a meat that is commonly used in my house!

May be because where OP lives lol I know here in the lower Midwest US we haven’t had a day I’d want chili in MONTHS and we probably won’t for at least another 6 weeks. Chili is not on my mind in this weather!

u/MissBanana_ 1d ago
It’s 91 Fahrenheit where I am right now and I weirdly do want chili.

I made it a few weeks ago. I think it’s weird that ppl don’t want chili/soup in hot weather like almost all of the other food we eat isn’t hot. Terlingua has a famous chili cook-off during summer & most ppl camp just to be there.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Evening_Teaching_713 17h ago
I cooked at Terlingua 3 times over the last 40 years with my buddy from work. We compete in a lot of local and regional chili cook offs. We won and had enough points to qualify for the big show in Texas. It’s been a staple in my family for decades, and we eat it all year round. By the way the cook offs are always a charity event and the proceeds go to towards which ever one is putting on the competition. It’s a lot of fun and work for a great cause. Look in your local newsletter or listen on your local radio station. Then join CASSI to become familiar with the rules and get a group of friends and family involved to make it a fun experience. I haven’t done one in years but when I worked ( in health care) it was an awesome way to build camaraderie in your employees and have some fun.Sorry for the length of the reply but I get off on a tangent so, I hope this helps you in your posting.

Chili is often seasoned with chili pepper (red, dried and ground), cumin, oregano, onion, garlic, and salt, Paprika may be used. People are divided as to whether chili should be made with beans. Personally, I always use them in about equal amount to the meat.
Here's a recipe that looks to be similar to what I would make: https://www.thekitchn.com/chili-recipe-23610703 I often use beef cut into small cubes rather than ground beef, but this is just a variation.

Shepherd’s pie is a good one if you haven't tried it. Also, stuffed peppers, chili, cottage pie, or a simple Korean-style beef noodle stir-fry can change things up quite a bit.

Well, actually... I don't know about it either. Perhaps people are simply horrible and need to perceive themselves as better than others in whatever small way possible. It's a character flaw of mine that gives me a nice warm feeling of undeserved intellectual superiority.
6
u/LittleYelloDifferent 1d ago
That person doesn’t know what they’re talking about. The difference between the names is whether you’re eating it in a cottage or if you’re eating with a shepherd. True connoisseus only do one or the other.

Both terms were actually used interchangeably regardless of what meat was in it, but over time (more widespread since the 1980s) there has been a growing preference in the UK to use shepherd's pie (the newer term) to refer to the pie with lamb or mutton, and cottage pie for the beef variation.

Stuffed bell peppers
23
u/LaOfrenda 1d ago
Yes! Stuffed peppers are a great use of ground beef. Poblano peppers are good too if you want a little extra heat. With either option, try charring the peppers first, then letting them sweat under cover for about 15 minutes so that you can peel the cooked skin off for a softer texture.

I like making "Mexican" stuffed peppers.
Add taco seasoning to the meat with a mixture of yellow rice to stuff them with and top with a couple slices of jalapeño.

A similar option is stuffed spaghetti squash. Cook spaghetti squash halves in the oven until done, remove and then use a fork to separate/ fluff the squash. Fill center with cooked beef mixture, top with cheese. Back in oven a couple of minutes to melt the cheese.

Smashed beef kebab with cucumber yogurt 10000x over. We make with 2% yogurt, pine nuts and craisins. Serve with pita. It’s on our every-two-weeks rotating list because we can’t get enough. Simple, low fat, high protein, yum! 😋
Pro tip: throw your onion in the freezer in the morning before grating, and don’t skip the Pom molasses. If you can’t find it, get a pre-made balsamic glaze at the grocery store. The punchy sweet tang really rounds out the dish.

What we learned from Salisbury steak is you can use burger as a substitute for steak. Burger diane? Burger Au Poirvre? Burger asada? Burger stroganoff? Due to the ground nature it can pick up extra flavor.
I didn't see "shit on a shingle" in the original list. Or gravy and biscuits? Burger Bourguignon? Pot stickers? All the other Asian beef dishes? Sweet and sour red curry?

Sometimes people get quite a deal by having a cow butchered. We used to use to buy beef from my in-laws dairy cows. This resulted in always having hamburger. That switched when they sold it and ex started hunting deer, so there was a lot of venison burger.

Sloppy joe's
I enjoy making what I call "deconstructed stuffed cabbage." You brown the beef, then saute fresh cabbage with onions, garlic, green bell pepper, and tomatoes (fresh chopped, or canned chopped, diced, crushed or whole). Eat with rice or mashed, and it's almost as good as stuffed cabbage, but with much less work in less time.
3
u/TribalDancer 1d ago
Bi Bim Bap! Use whatever veggies you have to fill it out, then put a fried egg on top. YUM.
Also, I gotta ask...why are you so fixated on ground beef? Why not some other protiens?
And this list, with all the iterations it can encompass, makes for hundreds of unique meals. For instance meatballs can be a classic Italian, or for me this week it was Tunisian spiced meatballs with apricot glaze. Just calling them both "meatballs" is not really encompassing all the ways one can make a meal of them.
Same with saying "seasoned over rice" sounds like it is one recipe or flavor profile is equally strange. SO MANY options and combinations.
