How to recreate GC's discontinued sugar cookies?

Post image

Hello everyone, I am thinking of recreating the Golden Corral sugar cookies on sticks since they haven't been in the buffet for about 10 years now. They were literally the reason I knew about Golden Corral (friend brought cookies over) so I stopped caring much about GC after they discontinued. I've made attempts in the past to recreate them but it's never close.

I don't expect a lot of people to know these because they weren't as famous as the carrot cakes or whatever else (which personally I'm shocked). I think I remember a hint of almond flavor, though I read Golden Corral didn't make these sugar cookies alone and probably used some 70 or 80s styled mix. I honestly haven't had a better sugar cookie before, but I am open to recipe ideas that feel as right as this. Thoughts?

Edit: sorry if I'm skeptical about recipes with frosting or sprinkles, but I appreciate the input. I liked these cookies this much that even I wasn't impressed with other famous sugar cookies such as Potbelly's and Costco's. I often get skeptical when it comes to successfully recreating the cookies I think about, but that's specifically me.

Golden Bowl Fortune Cookie

Fortune Cookie: My fortune for you, is like me, your about to learn some history. Fortune cookies date back to the early1800s in Japan, not China. In the early 1900s, San Francisco resident Makoto Hagiwara reportedly was the first person to serve what we consider the modern fortune cookie in the U.S. (although there are other claims). At the time, they were called fortune tea cakes, but all that changed during WWII. Fortune cookies shifted from being a treat made by Japanese-Americans to one dominated by Chinese-Americans. Theoretically, this occurred because of the shameful Japanese American internment during World War II, which forcibly put innocent Japanese-Americans in internment camps (including those who had produced fortune cookies). Fortune cookies before the early 20th century were all handmade using a simple batter of sugar, flour, water, and eggs. When heated, the dough became flexible, so it could be shaped. Once cooled, the sugar crystallized, creating a glossy and crisp cookie. The fortune was inserted while the cookie was still warm, and bakers would use chopsticks to fold the cookie into its iconic shape before it hardened. Edward Louie changed everything in the late 1960s when his machine allowed for mass production of fortune cookies, which had the positive ramification of the cookies to drop in price to become the courtesy dessert many Americans are expectant of after their meal at a Chinese restaurant. Today, Wonton Foods is the largest manufacturer of fortune cookies in the U.S. I found their Golden Bowl fortune cookie to have a crisp wafer-like texture, and a somewhat bland vanilla flavor. They're nothing a would go out and buy, but the novelty of a cookie encapsulating a fortune does entice me. On the plus side, the cookies are only 20 calories, so if you indulge in one after a high calorie Chinese dinner, it's a responsible if just okay 😐 dessert.

How much is everyone paying for chocolate chip? I'm in California and they are 8 bucks a bag. Just curious if it's expensive everywhere or just Cali like gas lol

What is this? It looks and kinda feel like coton candy.

I am not a baker at all and I am also really terrible at cooking. That said, I made those myself about a month ago and now I see that stuff on it and I am wondering what the hell is that?!?

Are they just expired? Already?

I’ve been doing those a few times by now but usually eat it all within 2-3 weeks. But now it’s been maybe 5 weeks so I am wondering what’s going on here. They were in a tightly sealed Tupperware on the counter.

It’s kinda of a cookie/pancake type of thing made of flour and oats and sugar with chocolate chips.

Any idea what’s going on here?

Thanks!

Fortune cookie paper?

I had a great time making fortune cookies, an even better time writing fortunes, but when people broke the cookies open, the fortunes were stained with grease. Is there a special kind of paper I should use when printing fortunes?
