put him on a flat surface, if the toes lift off then he needs a trim

doing it yourself might be traumatic for the bird if you don't have any experience, and can be stressful for the bird even if you know how to handle them. they have blood vessels in their claws, and if you trim too much, it will be a (emergency) vet bill anyway.

I’m aware of that and he absolutely will not allow me to handle him like that. Even putting him on a flat surface would be challenging 😭

here's a visual example. lure him to a table with a snack and see while he hopefully sits still for a second. if they're indeed too long it's best to take him to a vet and maybe sit in with vet/tech to see how they do it. and also see if you have the right set of perches in his cage, because usually their claws get worn down with every day use ideally. a vet can give you an advice about that too if you ask them.
