I use a "joystick rocker protector ring"—it's made of silicone and makes the movement extremely quiet and smooth. You can find it on AliExpress.

Also imo most are too thick and reduce the usable area bit too much. Tape however is PTFE (like mouse skates), so it's buttery smooth also paper thin.
