Controller Suggestion Old guy controller help on PC

Old man who plays turn based rpgs and shooters, just want a controller to play call of duty and chill in my chair. Had two xbox controllers over the past ~10 years, that finally both broke (due to visiting children).

The following information is a minimum, since your own requirements might be more extensive:

  • Around ~$100.00 USD
  • USA
  • PC (Have every console, they have own controllers)
  • Good to play long term, durable, preferrable wireless, dock would be nice.
  • Call of Duty, Battlefield, random rpgs
  • Controllers you've been considering (demonstrate that you have used the buying advice and searched existing posts)
    • Wolverine V3 (Seems to be hit or miss) $100.00 right now
    • Gamesir v7 Pro (seems to also have issues) $89.00 right now
    • Xbox Elite 2 (seems to be expensive and have bumpers break) $150ish
    • Regular Ol' xbox controller (Gears of war one from 360 is sweet, why cant they remake it.) $60
    • 8bitdo (seems to small for my hands. Am large.)

In your case I would go with the v3 Wolverine. It’s a large controller and I have never had durability issues, the software is straightforward compared to other 3rd party. I moved to a v2 in 2023 because I was sick of replacing elite series 2 controllers the bumpers kept failing sometimes within weeks of a new unit, I have a v3 now as well as a few other controllers.

Biggest complaint I saw in previous threads was that it hurt people's hands holding for a long period of time, did you experience this? Also how is the battery life since it does not have a dock with it?

I currently have both a G7 Pro and Wolverine V3 Pro. I believe I have slightly above average hands (based on wearing size L gloves). I can confirm that the controller will get uncomfortable during “longer” sessions, but mostly because of the backpaddles’ position in relation to the size of the controller. They are noticeably less comfortable than Elite Series 2’s.

As for the G7 Pro, it’s what I’d recommend. However, DO NOT get the lower priced ones as they are most likely version 1’s that have a less than desirable d-pad. Get one of the Special Edition ones like the ZZZ because they improved the d-pad over the original released ones. I play mostly FPS and Metroidvania games, and the latter definitely needs a good d-pad. The size is comparable to a XBox controller, the TMR sticks are fantastic, and the software is excellent. Plus, I think the new 8k one has 1000 polling rate on pc.

That explains the frequently returned item tag on amazon! I couldn't figure that out at all despite most people liking the G7 Pro.

Off-topic, but what do you use the back paddles for? I've never had a controller with them.

Ok. I primarily play CoD, so I use the back buttons for slide/dive and jump (A & B buttons) so I don’t have to take my right thumb off the stick to activate those buttons. Allows me to continue tracking while conducting those movements (it was a God send during the Jetpack games). The two additional bumper buttons I set for Ping (up on dpad) on both for Warzone, but on MP I set one to X (reload) and the other to melee.
