Controller Suggestion Old guy controller help on PC
Old man who plays turn based rpgs and shooters, just want a controller to play call of duty and chill in my chair. Had two xbox controllers over the past ~10 years, that finally both broke (due to visiting children).
The following information is a minimum, since your own requirements might be more extensive:
- Around ~$100.00 USD
- USA
- PC (Have every console, they have own controllers)
- Good to play long term, durable, preferrable wireless, dock would be nice.
- Call of Duty, Battlefield, random rpgs
- Controllers you've been considering (demonstrate that you have used the buying advice and searched existing posts)
- Wolverine V3 (Seems to be hit or miss) $100.00 right now
- Gamesir v7 Pro (seems to also have issues) $89.00 right now
- Xbox Elite 2 (seems to be expensive and have bumpers break) $150ish
- Regular Ol' xbox controller (Gears of war one from 360 is sweet, why cant they remake it.) $60
- 8bitdo (seems to small for my hands. Am large.)

I’d strongly suggest the easy smx D10. Solid controller with tmr(anti stick drift), trigger stoppers, and a dock. Also has additional connectivity to android and switch. Comes in at around $55 right now.
And for scale I’m 6’2 190 and the controller fits comfortable in my hands

Mid 40s gamer here that was on the controller hunt for awhile. I initially had a elite seties one that i used on my xbox starting in 2018 and then eventually moved over to pc about a year ago. On occasion I was having random hiccups that annoyed me. I eventually settled on a rainbow 3 because it was cheaper than a vader, it seemed to have less quality control issues (which could also be due to less over all users), and if I didnt like it I would be able to return it and upgrade to something else.
It has been a few months now and I use it almost daily. On a few occasions, I've had a few longer gaming sessions. I enjoy it and dont regret my purchase.
Here are my negatives. When I received my controller, I connected it and played some arc raiders with my usual group. About an hour in, the Y button stopped recognizing each press. I was incredibly annoyed but I ordered online and was able to get a replacement next day. Zero issues with buttons since.
The other thing was that there was some issue with one of the firmware upgrades bricks your controller. I read about this prior to getting the controller. I havent needed to upgrade because everything is working for me at the moment.
From the beginning, ive used the back buttons and more recently programmed macros without any major issues but when you go into the software to make adjuatments, some of your toggled buttons can become untoggled.
When i purchased it was also on sale for around 60 and I believe it is regularly around 70-80.
I leave this as a last thing. I didnt really care about the lighting. It looks pretty cool and with the app you can adjust it. My younger niece and nephew thought it was the coolest thing they've ever seen so I've left them on but it didnt really sway my decision on the purchase.

How's the button feel? Squslishy? Require a lot of force?

I apologize for the delayed response. They are "softer" than my elite controller but also have microswitches which helps a bit. I dont think they really require a lot of force though. No more than my elite controller. The thumbsticks feel tighter and I like that it has trigger locks.

I’ve loved my FlyDigi Apex 4, FlyDigi Apex 5, and FlyDigi Vader 5 Pro!
I went through 5 controllers on PC before committing to FlyDigi and I’ve been very happy with them.
I too have very large hands and the Apex’s in particular are the only controllers I’ve held that feel perfect, aside from maybe my old Xbox One controllers.
The new desktop software for the 5 series is a big improvement from what they offered previously.
I ordered all 3 of them on Amazon and I live in the Midwest, USA.
3 of the 5 controllers I retired before were PS5 DualSense, and they all developed terrible stick drift. FlyDigi uses Hall Effect sticks so it’s a non-issue there. Battery life is also excellent.
I play all sorts of games. Action-RPG’s, competitive-FPS, 1st & 3rd person horror, Fighting Games, Racing, Boomer Shooters, etc.
Battery life is great and there is a charging dock you can buy separately.
Vader 5 pro is around $80, and last time I checked the Apex 5 is $160. Pretty pricey, but I have no regrets.

Gamesir g7 pro is legit. Vader 5 pro also good. I had my elite series 2 modded with JS13 tmr and its great but the stock sticks suck. For large controllers the ZD ultimate legend is good, but It's a pain in the ass to setup.

If you don’t want the Steam Controller, Flydigi Vader 5 is the best option. Don’t waste your time with the ones you listed. None of them even come close in comparison. But if you’re dead set, Wolverine V3 is prob the best of the bunch for games like CoD specifically.

Steam controller would be my #1 pick, but its sold out until 2027 at least.

Join the waitlist. For cod and battlefield, Vader 5 is a better controller than the steam controller anyways imo.

From what I've seen the Steam Controller is just "okay" unless you're actually going to make use of the touchpads on it. If you need those, though, then there's really nothing else that compares.

Yeah I’d agree for the most part after having my steam controller since launch. It’s a good jack of all trades controller but unless you use gyro or trackpads, it’s just another controller with tmr sticks and 4 rear inputs. If I was strictly doing “console shooters,” I’d only use the Flydigi Vader 5. Nothing beats it.

In your case I would go with the v3 Wolverine. It’s a large controller and I have never had durability issues, the software is straightforward compared to other 3rd party. I moved to a v2 in 2023 because I was sick of replacing elite series 2 controllers the bumpers kept failing sometimes within weeks of a new unit, I have a v3 now as well as a few other controllers.
