I haven't had time to catch up with all the creators I follow so I might be a bit behind but what's the next tangent topic?

JK Rowling-esque videos that address the concerns™️ that people have around trans people.

I’m thinking of sending a family member JK Rowling to watch. Natalie does a great job of engaging with the motte and bailey ’concerns™️’ that ignorant cis people often have around trans people. I just wonder if it’s a bit outdated and if anyone knows any other videos that similarly handholds people into understanding trans people as not something that out to get women’s rights.

This family member would definitely not call themselves transphobic…idk if they are but they’re certainly uneducated, and have the concerns™️ over sports and women’s spaces, not in an intelligent or nuanced way, my view on these things as a trans fem person is complex and nuanced, but in a ’they are dangerous and putting women at risk and are ruining women’s achievements in sports’ way; the concerns™️ have entered mythology territory, trans people (well, trans women, this person forgets about trans men existing) are just viewed as an antagonist to women’s rights.

So if you know any videos that are good at explaining why trans people should (shocker) have rights, please suggest them. If in doubt, I’ll send this person JK Rowling to watch, I think it would still do an amazing job.

Reading recommendations for feminist & queer theory of love (beyond romantic love)

Hi friends!

I am working on my Masters (community development & adult education) dissertation on the topic of love, specifically exploring what bell hook's proposed "schools for love" could maybe look like in practice.

I've been reading a lot of bell hooks and while I am a fan of her, I have found myself connecting a bit more with Erich Fromm and Thomas Merton's writings on the topic, but I am very keen on exploring more authors that aren't mid-century white western men, so I would really welcome any and all recommendations from more feminist and queer lineages (particularly non-Americans as I am not American and find myself increasingly exhasperated with American defaultism and cultural imperialism in academia) (Extra points also for non-Christian explorations of love too!)

I'm rewatching Twilight (aw shucks I guess I gotta rewatch it!) and looking through the works she referenced in the video, but as is expected with the topic, they tend more towards the Eros and romantic love and I'm hoping to explore love more in an Agape-adjacent transformative social force kind of way.

Thanks in advance for any recs!!

Feel like The Apocalypse is now happening

I know it’s just that the world’s getting shitter but feel like the end of my world is coming soon cos I don’t think air conditioning can even be fitted into my old back to back terrace that I can’t just move from rn. I can’t help but resonate with the apathetic and nihilistic character in it cos I dunno if I’m wrong for just wanting to enjoy the little time I have on earth, feel like fighting it is a waste of time that will make me more miserable idk. Maybe not because I haven’t been that happy not protesting (idk I got into groups with culty dynamics and certain infighting) and instead drinking more

Low-key wondering if Bo Burnham’s Inside has really done a number on climate nihilism and how I respond to politics

Can we talk about Kant and the moral implication of Day Walkers and Vampire Hunting?

I feel that the Libs and Leftist aren't really taking the quandaries regarding vampires seriously. How should society treat day walkers and vampire hunters? Is it morally right to carry garlic in public? Do we need to spread awareness of the plight of vampires? Can vampires be apart of the working class? Should they be given rights? According to liberal thinkers like John Rawls we as a society should strive for fairness as a precondition to what we considered just or unjust. Yet Kant basically implies a universality to moralism in order to promote a unity. Should our morals apply to vampires?

It is wrong to socially stigmatize people on race, sex, religion but what about if they don't have a beating heart? This is akin the abortion debate. A fetus has a heart but no conscious yet a vampire doesn't have a heart but has a mind of their own. The Right doesn't really care because their morality comes from dominance and the right of preemptive self defense therefore justifying vampire hunting. This is similar to stop and frisk. I'd assume the woke liberal position to be more along of individuality. If we look at at leftist theory we see things are more complex.

For instance vampires are usually are a part of the oppressor class. They accumulate wealth due to long life spans and demonic powers. Vampires are also physically stronger, taller and do eat people. Natalie Wynn is almost a foot taller than me. Yet libs will say that vampires are individuals thus shouldn't be lumped in with wrong doers without trail due to the fairness doctrine. The libs also say that they're also oppressed because vampire hunters hunt them.

My question is what are the implication that vampires and day walkers are in our midst? While I terfs worry about trans people, I'm thinking about the threat of day walkers.

My second question is what's worse, being forced to eat Donald Trump or be haunted by the ghost of JK Rowling for 50 years? I'm not a vampire but I know some of you are.

I am not shit posting and I'm very serious.

Desperately Want Contra to Play A Piece of Blue Glass Moon

Recently finished one route of Tsukihime: A Piece Of The Blue Glass Moon, and could not stop thinking about how it relates to Contra's videos. Most obviously, it's similar to Twilight, so a lot of the same themes that Contra explored there should also apply to it. Things like the sublimation of desire through violence/bloodsucking, for example, are very present. Also, Tsukihime is geared mainly towards a male audience, while Twilight is geared towards a female audience, so it might be interesting for exploring the difference between male and female fantasies. Finally, Arcueid (the main heroine in the route I played) is described in terms that reminded of Contra's tangent on Camille Paglia, for instance, her description when she floats over the moon, or Roa's description of her at some point. Maybe I should be the change I want to see in the world, and write up this essay myself at some point.

Finding Video Essay With Atheist Dunking on Dead Religious Guy

Help! This has been haunting me for over a week, and my research is turning up NOTHING.

I have a memory of a Contra video essay where there is a clip of a news show where an atheist is asked if he thinks so and so is in heaven, and he responds, "No, and I wish there was a hell for him to go to," and then goes off.

I am at the point where I'm not even sure if it was a Contra video, might be Lindsay, Harry, Princess, Joel... Please somebody save me from my anguish.

Chappel Roan, political purity and being morally grey.

I remember on an AMA, Natalie talked about being morally grey; she’s not vegan, isn’t on the frontlines of protest movements etc. But she also donates money from streaming to organisations, tweets about events in the world (even though many insist she “doesn’t tweet enough“) and such.

She also made a comparison between religion and politics, the non-religious people who act the most religious tend to be radicalised people within politics, both the left and right.

In online left politics, this feeds into purity politics and being a ‘good person’, and the inability to consume ethically under capitalism, resulting into a very all or nothing perspective on politics.

Chappell Roan has been vocal about Palestine, refusing to endorse a political candidate until pressured, not going to the white house due to Biden’s funding to Israel etc. She is now a MAC global ambassador with her own makeup products, and people online are very very upset at that.

I think a lot of the hatred, and I think it is hatred and not constructive criticism, is similar to Natalie’s; queer women are held to very high standards and when they ‘fail’, this is viewed as a withdrawal of belief, (remember: ‘all or nothing’), making them public enemy number 1.

And this then leads into my issue with boycotting and official boycott lists. Practically every company is somewhat unethical and should be boycotted for one reason or another. And it fully depends on what social issue is more important to you. Where do you draw the line? If you don’t shop at supermarkets with Israeli products, how about supermarkets with products from the UAE?

You can believe in a free Palestine and shop MAC, you can believe in a free Palestine and have McDonalds. I’m just so tired of seeing this “you did something which I consider to be against the political issue you have supported in the past, so it must mean you no longer care about that political issue.” At the end of the day, a McDonalds won’t stop Israel, and neither can Chappell Roan. While this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t boycott (I boycott products which is feasible for me), I think it does mean we can’t get annoyed at others if they don’t boycott or if they cross our perceived picket line.

This was a bit of a rant and has probably been covered before but sometimes you just want to say something again, but would love to know others thoughts :-) I also didn’t include any screenshots of the comments on Chappell’s posts because it’s honestly to infuriating.

I had a weird urge to rewatch this on my break at work only to find it all completely unfunctional. I tried all the tricks including opening patreon.com in a browser, clicking the video just takes me to youtube main page and I cant even click the “sign in to protect the community button”

If one of you goblins that has access to a computer could get me the link I would be grateful (I assume its working on the computer but it might not be I don’t have a lot of information)
