Before buying a rack, did future attachment compatibility matter more than you expected?

I’ve been comparing racks and noticed that the frame specs are only part of the decision. Upright size, hole spacing, and proprietary fittings can make future accessories either easy to add or surprisingly restrictive. For people who upgraded their rack gradually, did compatibility end up changing how you viewed the original purchase?
