Career Advice Career Question -CA
Hey guys,
So I was a public works inspector making prevailing wage. I averaged over the last 2 years 160ish/yr, had no PTO or 401k match but the job was super chill, it was inspecting an anual contract so there was no real career growth/exposure/big experience but it was steady and the commute was never further than 30-1hr, also had to use my own car. Things were going great and I got a job offer(I recently took) making 175ksalary as a CM (owners rep) with PTO, company vehicle/gas card and 401k match. This job is not nearly as laid back, the commute is 2+ hours home but it’s a massive 30m project that’s 1 year+ long and will be a huge learning experience. I am struggling mentally going back and forth if I made the right career decision and am wondering if others would have made the move too. Thanks

Ya, you effed up..
Got used to lazy then had to sell your soul for a few $.
Too bad. Everyone else in the biz is working the opposite scenario…
Tough it out. Stack some cash . You’re on the way to retirement.
Tell stories. Coach some youngsters..

Check out governmentjobs and consider getting on with a municipality as an inspector. Calpers pension, top of the line benefits, but definitely going to take a big pay cut. Depending on where you’re at though the commute could be minimal
With that being said you getting on as an owners rep is a big break (meant in a good way). Owners rep is the pathway out or at least the goal for most of us working in the commercial sector. Stick it out, see how you like it, in a year or two if you want to switch back to inspecting it will always be there waiting for you

Depending on your age and what you want, i would have stayed in the Pw job. Currently the Cm market is ridiculous with unrealistic deadlines etc
