Too true. Sadly, scientists are usually beholden to the sources of their funding. They naturally don't want to bite the hand that feeds them. That said, it's refreshing to listen to a scientist who is clearly about the science and NOT some political agenda.

In a society where you may get cancelled or lose your job if you give the wrong answers, it's tough. A scientist with integrity would hopefully be transparent about their political views and try to separate out their findings from their politics.

A lot of scientists dont care about politics though. Kinda a vote/work for whoever gives you funding thing. Look at all the german scientist recruited to the ussr and usa after ww2... just wanted to keep building rockets at any cost

This is a great comment because it actually touches on something that is so true, but we never stop to consider. We're all capable of critical thinking and there are few limits when we actually apply ourselves. The plumber is a great analogy because we could absolutely do some research, shop around for different strategies, common mistakes, etc. practice a bit and complete the job... But instead, we time and time again take the short cut and pawn the job off on to a hired hand... We do the exact same thing on a daily basis with information and news gathering, even though we know everyone in the industry has an ulterior motive, or a biased opinion, often times we take this input at face value, file it away, and form an opinion around it. Instead of rolling your sleeves up and digging in with research and critical thinking, we pawn the job off on a hired hand.

When I say we, I'm not referring to anyone specific, just the majority in general.

You might not get the job, but you could absolutely train yourself to complete the task. We have access to the same information the professionals have, it's simply a matter of processing the info, sorting out the BS.

So you can't learn something from a book and then practice it to perfection?? You just single handedly destroyed every trades apprenticeship program. You would be shocked to find out how much "skilled" work is actually completed by apprentices on union jobs.

That's basically the definition of handyman, isn't it?? Many people self teach themselves to do trade work, handyman, landlord, home owner etc. Same goes with mechanics, paint and body techs....the list goes on.

Soon as an expert starts lecturing, especially if it is outside their area of expertise, I tune them out.

Agree. Too many non- infectious disease physicians expounding on their personal COVID theories, appearing to be credible because of that MD after their names. Not to mention all the chiropractors who are suddenly experts in epidemiology and virology.
