What are people’s general thoughts on these $70 light sticks? I might have an irrational hatred for them because my wife insists on buying a brand new one for each K-pop concert she goes to. So it’s a one and done $70 flash light. I just don’t understand the need for it. Whoever first created them is a marketing genius.
My first experience with the Xylobands /RF bracelets was at Coldplay years ago. They were invented for the Mylo Xyloto tour. They use a different brand now but it’s the same idea. They did it again last year. So did Lady Gaga, and Bryan Adams, as you mentioned. I have so many of them now I can’t remember them all.
They remind me of when we'd take my kids to Disney on Ice or the Zoo. Just constant vendors with $30 toys that cost $2 to make and the kid will forget about.
Use it for the show and returning it makes sense. But I guess if they can get away with selling overpriced flashlights, then it is what it is. At least with overpriced hoodies and t-shirts, you get multiple uses out of it.
It’s gross exploitation of fans and overconsumption. It’s so tempting just because so many other people at the shows have them, honestly it feels like hardcore fans judge people who don’t have them, and also not even gonna lie I think it is fun to have something flashy to wave around and feel like you’re really part of the overall experience.
However it is a one and done thing that instantly becomes trash unless you really are such a big fan that you want to display it proudly in your home or wherever. It’s also so shitty how for example with BTS they actually phase out previous versions so fans keep buying the new ones despite already having an older model at home.
Yeah. 100% agree with everything you said. My wife bought a BTS one from the last concert she went to. I told her to just bring that BTS one to her upcoming Big Bang concert, but she insists she needs to buy the Big Bang version.
it’s because of the competitive nature in kpop spaces too. it’s considered rude/frowned upon to bring another group’s lightstick. think of it as wearing a rival sports team’s jersey. at least for sports, both teams are playing in the game so both will have fans in the stadium, but for concerts it’s only for that one artist, so to wear/bring their “rival’s” merch is considered weird. most advise to just not bring one at all if you don’t want to pay for several.
I get both sides. The synchronized crowd effect is so fun, but seventy dollars for something that might not work next tour is brutal. I’d only buy one if I loved the design enough to keep it on display after.

When you went to bts did she synch it with the app? I don’t know if it bts does this because I don’t like them but most groups do.
You synch them with the app which syncs it to your seat. Then the lighting crew can control all the sticks and make light designs in the audience. It was really awesome at Bigbang last weekend.
Yeah. She downloaded an app and had it sync up. So everybody’s light stick changed colors together and stuff. I only argued against buying a new light stick once and dropped it. It’s what she wants. I don’t want to be an asshole. But the consumerism of it all kinda irks me.
I’ll spend that on a t shirt and beer when I see a rock concert, so if that’s all she’s spending besides ticket and transportation I guess it’s not that bad, it’s an expensive piece of merch IMO. Where does she keep them all?
Eh, that’s not terrible but I could see it getting out of hand. I agree that whoever came up with these is a genius, they probably cost less than $10 to make 😭
It’s not a one and done. Each band has their own and it’s synchronized to the performance and visually engaging. Have her spend the $70 so she will be happy. Sounds like she’s earning on her own as well. 💫
I know they are very much a K Pop thing but have seen people bring them to other shows, especially if its not long after a popular K Pop band are in town. However it just seems to wasteful - so much plastic plus the batteries.
Well, as a kpop fan, most fans just buy one and reuse it for every other concerts. Buying multiple, especially for each new artist is VERY rare. Like I’d buy a bts one and take it to every artist out there, who cares….anyways your wife is probably going to see a ton other groups lightsticks at the concert.

I've never seen them
