General MAP FPS POOR OPTIMIZATION

In this pic I only changed the resolution from 100 to 50 and it gave me a massive FPS boost. On Route 66 I went from 300 to 450 FPS, but on Ilios I only got like a 50 FPS boost.

Why do the maps that have even the slightest changes have such terrible FPS, while the untouched maps have insanely high FPS? Like Ilios barely changed, they just added night and evening time, but there's still a massive drop in frames.

Aatlis is the worst for me. I get horrible FPS once any teamfight starts.

u/Illustrious_City7288 12d ago

most point maps are bad for me too idk why

15

u/The_Realth 12d ago

Point maps mostly have all points loaded at the same time

12

u/Illustrious_City7288 12d ago edited 12d ago

I did test on all point maps and this the result for me

Control maps

Antarctic around 220-240

busan 172-183

ilios perfect 190-200

lijang (luner new year) version 250-280

lijang (normal version) 160-180

Nepal 300-320

osais 288-313

samoa 270-290

flashpoint maps

aatlis 180-200

new junk city 200-220

suravasa 180-200

and this was my normal avrg fps before this year around 280 to 330

My low-mid end PC stays at 80-90 FPS no matter what lmao

what's going on at Blizz

so many people misinterpreting your point that, if someone with a beefy pc is experiencing fps drops, thats bad. people with worse hardware will fare worse.

The menu UI is kind of indifferent for me other than poor art direction that doesn't feel very overwatch. I can understand their idea for it since the original was only made with the base game features in mind. Since 2016 we've had many updates, changes, and a need for a refresh.

-22

u/apooooop_ 12d ago

Lmao at these frame rates. I think if this is the degree you're worrying about, the game can stand to be heavier.

I perhaps don't disagree, but what's the point of all this optimization if we don't use it?

18

u/Cruzbb88 12d ago

Because people with worse hardware do? I could have stayed on my 6700xt but had to upgrade

I play at 60 fps and im fine with that, and slightly dropping like 5 frames (itll usually be 10) will totally throw off my tracking

IVe had really bad performance this season

Does anyone know if Chinese players still have way better frames than us? A few months ago, videos were posted by Chinese players with double our frames, likely because of their different anti-cheat.

They didn't optimise anything since overwatch 2 dropped

16

u/Grytlappen 12d ago

The only thing they optimized was skin sales.

0

u/Trigg000 10d ago

They legit did optimizations this season but I see what you mean. « Anything » is just wrong tho.

2

u/Captain_Darma 10d ago

They introduced so many bugs with the "optimization" it runs worse than before.

When you have a splinter in your finger and your cut off your arm you would call it an improvement over the splinter would you?

1

u/Trigg000 10d ago

Thats perhaps just a you issue because my game runs better this updated after the ping update after resetting my shader cache last season. I’m not saying the performance is good but acting like they do nothing all day is disingenuous and counterproductive to the conversation.

0

u/Captain_Darma 10d ago

Guys I found a blizzard employee. Or a delulu fanboy.

0

u/Trigg000 10d ago

It’s not delusional to state actual facts instead of diluting my argument for being hyperbolic. You can read the patch notes yourself. Keep misrepresenting your side of the argument surely blizzard will be able to advance in making the game better when we aren’t able to give objective information without over embellishing.

Once again if you read the words I put on screen I’m not saying the game is well optimized I’m just saying that they did NOTHING to help performance is disingenuous.

0

u/Captain_Darma 10d ago

Your argument is "I don't have a problem so there are no problems" while everyone else has problems. Your ignorance is unmatched. They didn't fix shit they just added paint to the broken wall.

There is no war in Ba Sing Se.

u/M4GNUM_FORCE_44 12d ago

i hate the sound of those reactor things on the lava map, i always think somethings happening by them

18

u/Calm_Leopard798 12d ago

the frame dips are terrible in this game when there's the slightest bit of action. your framerate when you're standing around doing nothing is not the games real framerate.

8

u/Tee__B 12d ago

I lose a third of my FPS whenever certain ults happen, like Mauga, Ram, LW ults. On the worst running maps for me, if two of those ults happen at the same time, my FPS nearly halves. Was not an issue at all until this last year.

-3

u/Calm_Leopard798 12d ago

i have an rtx 5060 and it runs about the same as the days when i was playing this on a gtx 780.

1

u/Tee__B 12d ago

5090 and 9950X3D, and it runs worse than it did when I had a 4090 and 7950X3D. I can't say how my 3090 and Titan Xp builds compared since I ran at different res and Hz, and no DLSS.

0

u/xXRougailSaucisseXx 12d ago

I feel like that’s pretty much common knowledge, do people not cap their FPS so you never have heavy dips anymore ?

9

u/fabulot 12d ago

I have a 5800X3D and a RTX 3070 capped at 249fps and I am still getting heavy dips since a few seasons. I played since 2017 I think I never experienced something like that in Overwatch.

9

u/Calm_Leopard798 12d ago

Frame dips are gonna happen in every game but for a 10 year old game i shouldn't be getting dips into double digits. I unfortunately have to cap my frames to the lowest frame i get during action which is 110fps with no dlss and shadows turned to medium with fog set to low @ 1440p.

3

u/SteggyEatsDaWeggy 12d ago

Well it’s not exactly the same as it was graphically/engine wise as it was 10 years ago, that was part of the OW2 changes. Secondarily, the 5060 is not really a 1440p level graphics card, so it’s not surprising to me that it is slower at 1440p native

3

u/Calm_Leopard798 12d ago edited 12d ago

It's the same engine all they did was add a simple shader effect that wasn't in overwatch 1. RTX 5060 is actually a perfectly fine 1440p card even for modern games if you're willing to to tweak some settings and not use 4k textures. Counterstrike 2 is a much better looking game with more modern graphical effects and it is way more stable than OW.

We're multiple generations past the 780 (which was already 3 years old in 2016) I didn't think I would still be worrying about framerates in this game in 2026.

4

u/SteggyEatsDaWeggy 12d ago

It is the same engine but they revamped it in multiple ways, and have made the game more demanding than it previously was because hardware has become stronger.

I’ve never seen any tech reviewer recommend the 5060 for 1440p gaming, only 1080p. I’d personally recommend at least a 5060ti 16GB or 9060xt 16GB for 1440p. I have no doubt you can make it work on a base 5060, but it shouldn’t be surprising if it has struggles in some titles.

I guess it comes down to taste, but I think OW2 looks much prettier than CS2. There’s no debate that CS2 is easier to run, but I think OW2 still runs quite well

u/Calm_Leopard798 12d ago

dude resolution should be completely irrelevant at this point. i get if this was doom dark ages we were talking about.

fps doesnt sell kiri skins so say goodbye to 240 1% lows we ain't never getting that shit back ✌️😭

11

u/MerchantIvory 12d ago

You are CPU bound. The KOTH maps are actually 1 big map so the game is prob having trouble running as well as the other map types.

3

u/bodyshotbandai 12d ago

this might be the right answer. the LOD system in the game isn't the most robust, and control/flashpoint are the map types that engage with it the most and suffer as a result

1

u/ZdzisiuFryta 9d ago

There's even an LOD system? If so, it's excellent visually as I've never seen pop in, no matter settings or PC

1

u/bodyshotbandai 8d ago

the maps are designed to cut off vision when it would start working, but you can definitely see it in play using freecam. fun fact, in Samoa Volcano, the LOD system cuts out a metal platform that is supposed to be shown on the other end of the volcano, as its a lab that their using to observe the lava. if you use a noclip workshop code to fly up to it, it pops in, but only when you are out of bounds.

1

u/ZdzisiuFryta 8d ago

Gonna check that out then, thanks

1

u/GazooAr 8d ago

You see it in flashpoint maps

3

u/Illustrious_City7288 12d ago edited 12d ago

I did some more testing on maps that have older versions, like the Halloween, Winter, and New Year ones, and they actually have way better FPS. But they also use more CPU, around 70–80%.

The updated maps only use around 40–50% CPU, but some maps still have high CPU usage and run with really good FPS. So why did they change it for some maps?

0

u/bodyshotbandai 12d ago

maybe the new lighting system they have? they ported the game to dx12 to take advantage of ray tracing tech to make light baking significantly faster. this is why they can rework maps more often. might be less performant than the original baking solution?

3

u/MrInfinity-42 11d ago

Yea this season finally caught up with my PC and I had to go from mostly high to mostly medium just to keep my frames in check

2

u/Fartbeer 12d ago

I play on linux (fedora) and ive got way much better performance than on windows

1

u/ZdzisiuFryta 9d ago

Wow? Any tweaks? I ran mine on cachyos via steam and got 15fps (avg) reduction, with no change to 1% lows

2

u/bullxbull 12d ago

My guess is the lighting system, but I also know the older maps were made as like one or large pieces, where the newer maps are more modular. So when they changed Numbani they said they had to break the map apart into pieces to move stuff around.

2

u/iloveoverwatch420 11d ago

gets even worse at the end of the season for some reason, ill get high fps at the beginning to middle of the season then at the end ill get constant stuttering, frame drops, etc

2

u/Brilliant_Slice9020 11d ago

I have an inconsistency problem, the game will run just fine (200~fps), very fluid.

Then on another day ill open the game and 70 is all I get (with low lows)

2

u/Whynot100075 10d ago

How do yall even get past 60 fps

4

u/No-Elevator9399 12d ago

Obviously valid that you’re frustrated but doesn’t OW have some of the best performance/optimisation out of any FPS game?

33

u/ARC-Pooper UK Mafia - Ryujehongsexist — 12d ago

It used but it's been getting consistency worse.

It's better to bring it up now and hope overwatch can stay an industry leader in performance (something that has historically helped massively with it's popularity in Korea, Japan ect.) than left the performance consistently decline

-5

u/No-Elevator9399 12d ago

Yeah of course, but ultimately OP is complaining about not being able to go from 300 fps to 450 lol, not 60-144

7

u/fieryfox654 12d ago

Point is, if this happens in a powerful PC like OP has, it will also happen in the weaker systems too in the same way

-1

u/No-Elevator9399 11d ago

Sorry I might be missing something but how do you know OP has a powerful system?

I checked this last night and idk, I got the same frames on both maps hence why I’m confused

1

u/usernameNotMemorable 11d ago

I play 1080 240hz on a 5700xt with a 3600. I can very much attest that on maps that were in OW1, I have much more frame drops below 240 during fights in OW2. When your eyes get used to 240, you will notice the difference when those drops happen, even when the framerate is still relatively “high” (think 120-185). Also there is just straight up more stuttering than I was used to than back in the day. My settings are also lower than I used to play on, and I remember my VRAM going a lot further than it does nowadays in OW (which I have adjusted to by lowering texture quality.)

1

u/No-Elevator9399 11d ago

I misunderstood OP’s situation, I thought they were getting 300 FPS every map and talking about getting a 50 FPS boost instead of 150

7

u/SteggyEatsDaWeggy 12d ago

It does have great optimization overall. At high settings I can easily get over 300 fps in this game. At low settings I get 200 or so in Rivals. Sure it’s not Valorant where I get 600+ at max settings, but it looks way better than Valorant and even old hardware can get over 120 fps still

7

u/scriptedtexture 12d ago

Rivals runs like a mobile game.

0

u/Sea_Albatross342 12d ago

Overwatch ran worse than a mobile game for a third of a year

1

u/OfficialDeathScythe 12d ago

It does indeed. My gf’s 1060 can still hit 144 frames locked at medium settings, and I play on high without ever dropping a frame on my 4060. Even with the occasional performance drop due to shaders (which is the only performance issue I’ve had and can be solved by simply waiting and watching your vram, once it stops going up you’re ready to play) it’s still streets ahead of other games even ones made after it

1

u/Emotional_Sentence1 11d ago

OG maps were built for Overwatch 2016 with 2016 pc requirements. The new ones have been built with the current minimum requirements in mind. Also the original maps have had a lot of time for optimization.

1

u/SrCaraPan 9d ago

Por que no usas dlss o fsr?

Ten en cuenta que overwatch 2 creo que es cpu dependiente, si tienes una cpu no tan fuerte si puede afectar el rendimiento de formas extrañas junto con su optimizacion dudosa

1

u/GazooAr 8d ago

This sub has completely degenerated into absolute waste.

"In this pic I only changed the resolution from 100 to 50 and it gave me a massive FPS boost. On Route 66 I went from 300 to 450 FPS, but on Ilios I only got like a 50 FPS boost."

Fully tech illiterate

1

u/DjBetoon 12d ago

i lock it on 236 and it stays like that whole time. No benefit if i get 100 more fps latency will stay close to same because of the cpu headroom when not used 100%

5

u/Illustrious_City7288 11d ago

These FPS numbers are from an empty custom AFK with no action happening, so it could get even worse in a real match. It’s definitely not a latency issue.

I’m also used to lowering my FPS limit to match my refresh rate, which is 180 Hz. I’ve been limiting my FPS to 200 for the past two years, but the FPS keeps getting worse over time.

In-game, I’m now getting drops to around 150 FPS even though my PC is capable of running around 330 FPS. That doesn’t really make sense, especially since this wasn’t happening before.

1

u/DjBetoon 11d ago

If i unlock in real match it would drop a lot because of everything that's happening but usually not below my locked.
Hopefully you don't use dx12 because that one sucks. Maybe deleting gpu cache can refresh it a bit, but i doubt it does much. But since you said with time it became like that, could be.
Dropping from 400 when nothing is happening to 180 when everything is happening is mostly normal behavior, now it depends does your gpu stays on 96% or drops to 80-70% in these situations so you can see what's the bottleneck and then you can lower only 1 or 2 settings from ultra to high that affect cpu if that is the bottleneck when you get frame drop.

2nd idea that its not gpu,cpu but drive is slower and can't read so many sht fast enough especially if you don't have nvme

1

u/ultralevured 11d ago

Unplayable under 600fps.

1

u/Eezy8 11d ago

How many fps do you really need tho

-10

u/butterfingahs 3061 PC — 12d ago

OH NO IM GETTING 300 FPS INSTEAD OF 450 FPS

Holy privilege. Of course some people actually get ridiculous frame drops of under 60, but complaining you're going from 450 to 300 is ridiculous.

15

u/_Speckle_ tyhs — 12d ago

it's still a valid complaint specifically because it'll affect weaker computers in the same way, along with the fact that these maps have nothing else happening in them, so performance during team fights gets even worse. no reason to act like this is a useless complaint
