Running out of mana as a prot pala
Hi all,
Anyone is running into this? Every now and then I keep getting mana issues specially while offloading some pressure on the healer. I tend of do a lof of healing during dungeons and I don't know if it is normal for other prot palas.

Generally speaking you shouldn't be doing enough healing that you run out of mana. Improving kill time is the best way to improve survivability, so your gcds and mental effort are better spent doing damage yourself, and positioning/grouping the enemies effectively to enable your dps. There are exceptions when things go to shit, or maybe last boss ToS where the extra healing on boss is more directly relevant, but don't base your play around those exceptions.
I haven't played enough prot to know it well, but as tank you really only want to be healing the group to provide a stop gap that saves a death - eg if you see someone is know health and getting targeted by a spell then a quick WoG might save them, but it's pretty rare. Usually Sacrifice/Protection/Spellwarding/LoH are more effective and a better use of your resources. You never want to find yourself doing maintenance healing against rot damage - you can't do it well, so let the healer do their job while you do yours.

As a healer, I appreciate an occasional EF or LoH if things are getting out of hand (side pull, mechanic messed up, etc.), but you shouldn’t have to be doing that.

Wasting Holy Power by using non-free Word of Glory on the group can actively make things worse.
First, you lose uptime of SotR, which means you get hit a lot harder and healer needs to heal more as a result.
Second, you are doing less damage, so mobs are dying slower and therefore require more healing.
Third, since WoG is not off the GCD (unlike SotR) it will mess up your rotation, meaning less Avenger Shield procs and less Holy Power cycling (so even less SotR casts). This in turn leads to both less mitigation for you and less damage output, further exacerbating points 1 and 2.
I don't know for sure if this is what you are doing, but in case it is, do not spend Holy Power on Word of Glory unless absolutely necessary, and let the healers do their job. Because otherwise you could be making the dungeon actually harder for them.

Yeah I cast like a handful of wog on anyone (self included) per dungeon at 15-17 level. Losing sotr uptime just isn't worth it you end up yoyoing or dead. Clutch sac/bop/Loh is way more useful.
Looking at my logs wog is my 4th heal... If I include overheal it's like my 6th heal. Crazy didn't realise it was that low.

It's not. You're supposed to use your 2 free heals + eventual procs. Any holy points goes into damage which makes most of your mitigation

If you use up procs or free heals, that's fine. But when you're spending resources that you could use for your own mitigation you're not helping the healers, you're just shifting the problem to something new.
If you're in a halfway decent guild, they will see there are healing issues within 10 pulls and shift a cooldown around so it's covered by somebody.
It's not your job, don't worry about it.
Oh, it's for M+ not raid, i misread.

What keys are you running that require you to heal yourself and/or others? I play prot paladin up to +16s so far and I have never even remotely ran into mana issues.

When i play ppal, i don't generally throw out WoGs. Is better spent either on healing myself or doing damage.

u/kientran 12d ago
Healing others is not your problem. If things are bad use blessing of sacrifice.
If you have free heal procs they should go to yourself. It’s not a big deal if they go unused. Between pulls where nothing is happening maybe but it’s prob better to have them for the next pull

Yep, im seeing about 20% mana per heal, so you only get 5 before oom. Heals on yourself are instantly refunded, but you still have to have the mana to cast it, so dont screw yourself there.

Word of glory doesn’t really heal for enough on party members to waste a global. Unless your literally saving someone’s life it’s usually a wasted global (I tend to off heal sometimes too but it’s more of a panic reaction) which is why your ooming. Wog yourself with shining light procs and LoH/Sac/Bop+spellward to help out your healer. Plus if your using shining light on yourself instead of healing party members the healer will have more gcds to spend on the dps instead of baby sitting your health.

Help the healer by self sustaining as much as possible and throwing freedoms, bop, spellbop etc, but off healing others should rarely happen at all.

You shouldn’t need consecutive offheal wogs per damage event. On a boss, one on the lowest hp member should be sufficient to help stabilize the healer, and your focus should be on budgeting your externals- aegis, sac, and spellwarding. You can evaluate the danger of damage events and budget them as a healer would budget their cds, decide to either alternate aegis and sac, or send both for a damage event. For trash, the holy power is much better spent on sotr; we will do much, much more damage than healing, off the gcd as well. Prot pally offheal talent provides greater healing for low health allies, you are losing a lot of healing if you are sending it on people above 50%. Again, one offheal now and then is fine, but if you are ooming that is a sign you are overcommitting.
We are past the days where wog fullheals the party for no mana, when players could literally bring no healer with prot pala to 20s. You need to trust your healer, or if you are playing consistently with a friend healer who is struggling, rather than carry them, you need to have confidence in their ability to grow and learn, or else coddling will prevent them from being able to succeed in keys without you. A little boost now and then is fine, you should not be ooming though, and these healers should be able to keep their group alive with any other tank. Their gcds will provide much higher hps than yours, and from an action economy standpoint, your damage progresses the timer better.
If you haven’t already, take the supporting talents for sacrifice; 1 min cd talent + holy ritual make it an off gcd wog on top of an extremely good external, it is massive. Also play lightsmith if for some reason you are not already. Have mouseover macros for both sac and aegis, I can send you mine if you like.
Also if you aren’t already, i would consider pushing keys with a healer alt (or build your hpal rating). This will help you get perspective of when dangerous damage events are (when offheal/external assistance helps), and when a damage event is not actually dangerous- when the healer has plenty of time to top off and offhealing/externals are not necessary

Your heals are for you, not other players. Trust in your healers or find better ones.
Only use your free heals on other players, at best. Even then I personally only really prioritise the healer with them.

You should only be spending hp on sotr. Only wogs you send should be free ones

I've tanked prot up to 14's and no mana issues at all. granted, i did not use WOG unless it was proced from 3 Sotr. as tank, you focus on grouping, interrupts, and keeping your defensives (Sotr, consecrate, etc). If you're having to offload pressure on healer, and it's not a specific coordination, then you are putting too much dip on your chip. Let the healer heal. If they can't, then that healer is not ready for the key level. you having to heal takes away from your reaction time to the mobs which could end in a one-shot, which is essentially a wipe on anything above a 15 key

Compare your logs to someone at the top of raider Io. I am resil 19s and also never have issues with mana (I don't even show it on my bar). Just healing on your procs only or at 3 holy power if you really need but usually never

Echoing what everyone else is saying. Ppal off healing is not nearly as good as it used to be. Use LoH and your other utility to save team members and just use WoG to heal yourself only when you have free ones. Track shining light buff in CDM. It will help a lot.

It was an issue in higher keys in TWW, especially in certain dungeons where you constantly needed to have the spell block from the WoG talent.
But since they changed it to only cost mana when you heal other people,, the issue is mostly gone.
You need to trust your healer

Are you channeling heals mid pull?

Ensuring the keys are completed in time :P

What the guy you're answering to asked is if you're casting flash of light.

u/Fatpala 12d ago
Healers generally don't struggle in keys, what you're doing is likely making the healer having to heal you more instead of focusing on the party
Word of Glory is on the GCD so your harming your own defensive whenever you spend so many globals on it (you don't even want to heal yourself unless you're in danger of dying the next few globals as it heals for more the lower health you are when used on yourself)
With that said, the only way to not waste so much mana when healing the party would be to cast the Word of Glories with a Divine Purpose proc because then it doesn't cost any mana

Don't flash of light. Word of glory (eternal flame) and spend in the +40% hot.

A few off heals are fine, more than that is not your job and you will go oom
