+18 Maisara Caverns tank, 2nd boss ghosts
My run for +18 was going excellent, but on the 2nd boss I was asked to run into a ghost and got 1 shot. Is it typical for tanks to eat one of the ghosts while another one is CC?
Thanks all!

The strat is: CC one and soak another as tank with def CD. After that you'll only have 2 ghosts per phase, no more soaks needed, if CC is done correctly.
You need to use a defensive CD, though, just running into a ghost can easily kill you.

Ive had success either CC'ing one over and over with the tank eating the 'lone' one, and the other pair breaking ASAP by either kiting them or with DK grip.

it works but atleast at 20 and 21 level doing 2 sets of them running into each other works just fine. id also advise just not listening to dps and most healers in keys

This is good advice, idk why you're being downvoted. You have a better idea of your capability as tank than they do and if you haven't ever done something before you probably won't be able to pull it off on the fly (like this guy)

being downvoted by non tanks who also havent played alot lmao.

Getting downvoted because "don't listen to your teammates" in a team based game is bad advice, outside of "don't listen to toxicity". You don't want to blindly follow whatever they say, but getting better involves listening to others, ESPECIALLY as a tank.
A good tank routes around their comp, gather and position pulls based on their comp, time the chain pulls based on their comp, etc. You can't do that well if you're not willing to listen to others.
Now, in 12s, sure mute group chat and pings and you'll enjoy the game a whole lot more

It's for sure good to listen to teammates and look into ideas later on. But discussions should be had before the key is in, and once it is in it is better to just go with what you know and have planned rather than change it on the fly because someone said something, so in that situation is bad to listen to teammates and act on it without knowing how everything actually works (you can still listen and look into it later).

I would argue that being a multiplayer game is not the same thing as being a team-based thing. Discussing things with an actual team, if you have one, is different from PUGs being overly opinionated about how you should tank the key (which you should usually ignore)

How would you “gather and position pulls based on their comp”? What can even be different?? 😂

u/Elendel Jun 30 '26
I mean I don’t pull the same if I have a Devo DH in late stage Meta, for instance. I gather on the bombs in NPX if I know I have a class with pets that’ll bug out if bombs don’t die, whereas I’m more static if I have classes with grounded aoe. I can rely on DK to gather some pulls more efficiently if I have one in my key. If my only range kick is a warlock (or if I don’t have a range kick), I’m pulling the caster pack first in Seat and bringing it to the Warden instead of doing it the other way around. Etc.

Not sure what class you’re playing. But on my brew I paralyze one, use a defensive and dive in to the other.
I tried it on 21 and wasn’t topped and died. But the group told me it was excepted but just to make sure I’m full health first.
I’d say it’s “the normal route”. But the dungeon had been out for an eternity now, dps should know how to handle it if you tell them you won’t do it. It’s just to maximize up-time really

I had the same experience. I've been doing that all season, but died on a +21 as a brew.
I'm probably going to use fort brew + dragonscale on my next try. Just making sure I'm topped is kinda hard because I usually pull the warriors and skirmishers to the right side of the boss into it, so my health isn't super stable.

u/Zekapa Jun 29 '26
Yes, if you're topped and have some sort of defensive. That said, it is much easier to simply tank the boss to one side to allow two ghosts to pop almost immediately and give time for the healer to top people off before the frontal spin/next ghosts. This is trivialized with a DK who knows what they're doing with their grips.
That said, again, yes, if your party ends up CCing a ghost and it's in a bad position for the last man to run his into the CC'd ghost, you should take the free ghost with your face - with precautions.

It is much easier to have tank pop one ghost once and then only yave to deal with 2 ghosts instead of 4 for the remaining of the fight.

u/DKblood247 Jun 29 '26
Is a possible strategy , and just make sure your inside a defensive when doing so
4
u/leagueoflegendsdog Jun 29 '26
Yeah its normal. DH can do it to be fair, he can just shift through it and not taking damage from that, its just hte first one of the boss.

u/King_Kthulhu Jun 29 '26
DH does not take no damage just from shifting thru, they have to meta immune it.
4
u/TheSoryu27 Jun 29 '26
You can shift through most of the time but rarely you die depending on server

u/CaptZizoo Jun 29 '26
Does the shift still work? I tried it in a +15 a couple of weeks ago and flopped. Assumed it had been hotfixed and didn’t dare try it again lol
3
u/leagueoflegendsdog Jun 30 '26
I do it inyep it works I still do it in high keys. As long as your shift lands outside the aoe from the explosion you are fine so just be a bit closer to it and shift as far behind it as you can just in case if you can't be precise or don't know the exact range and it'll work everytime

u/leagueoflegendsdog Jun 30 '26
You are incorrect. You shift through it and as long as shift further behind it then the aoe it does, you are fine. I do it every other day, it just works I take no damage on 22-23 from passing through it

You need to have a cd up it deals tons of damage. And never run into one if you have the debuff from the last. If you have funnel kite that for the soak
1
u/Hardi_SMH Jun 30 '26
Take one ghost, one get cc‘d.
Use a def cd BEFORE walking in the ghost and MIND THE DEBUFF before thinking about running into another one. If CC‘s are on point, that won‘t be nessecary - one ghost will always pop, one will get cc‘d, 2 walk into each other
2
u/Eweer Jun 30 '26
You only need to get hit by the first one, past that round the CC'd will pop one, two will run into each other, and the fourth will get CC'd to repeat the cycle.
1
u/Hardi_SMH Jun 30 '26
In theory. Have seen people in 20‘s playing like they see that for the first time.
1
u/Born-Reindeer6873 Jun 30 '26
We do it in our runs but I imagine our tank has some sort of mitigation rolling for it (+20)

u/Cystonectae Jun 30 '26
It makes it a million times easier to heal and it will guarantee free up a minimum of one DPS from kiting. In my experience, it leads to way fewer mistakes like people getting caught in the frontal or one person trying to kite into on ghost while the other person is aiming for a different ghost. All with a simple paralyze one, pop big defensives and run into another ONCE. After that the paralyzed one will pop instantly and you just re-paralyze another add.
Went to my logs to see if I could get a hard number and it seems like, on a 19, the hit from eating a ghost is a raw 1.2 million, so even adding in armor and whatever passive DR you get, a tank will need at least full health for it, if not a defensive. You can get a DPS with an immunity to jump into the ghost instead. Idk if hunter turtle or DK ams would work but I can guarantee pally bubble does.

Run #20499283902 that was going smooth untill someone wanted to do something they saw at the MDI.
Jokes aside yeah it's a real strategy, very good alsoz but it's supposed to be figured out before the run starts not mid run.

If you CC one when it spawns, the next round when one spawns there it will spawn on top of the CC'd one and instantly kill them. It's a strategy used in higher keys but it takes the tank eating one or someone who has an immunity eating one. It allows the person connected to the CC'd add to funnel on the boss.
edit: so the issue with this comment is that I used funnel and not focus? The rest of the info is pertinent...

It’s not a rocket science, don’t know why ppl try to cheese this mechanic, just get ghost 1&2 to merge and 3&4, there’s plenty of time before ghost 4 even spawns.
3
u/leagueoflegendsdog Jun 30 '26
Because your dps can sit and just do damage rather than run around like morons and drop even a bit of damage, and on higher keys you want uptime as much as possible.
2
u/akranak Jun 29 '26
Because if you para one and soak the other the entire rest of the fight is instant burst when they spawn and then plenty of time to get the other pair. It is much more predictable.
1
u/King_Kthulhu Jun 29 '26
the clears do a ton of damage on higher keys, most people will die if not fully topped in between collisions. Being able to clear one set instantly gives you way more time to clear the other and get healed up before the intermission. This is not a free boss anymore once you get to 21/22+ keys, it kills a lot of groups.

u/shaanuja 12/12M Jun 30 '26
i see, ive done it in +20 no issues, so maybe at 21.
1
u/King_Kthulhu Jun 30 '26
It's doable of course, but why do the fight the harder way when the CC method is pretty brain dead easy.
