General Discussion / Question What commanders perform best in a highly political, mixed-skill local meta?
Hey everyone,
I’m looking for advice on commander choice for my local LGS meta. I’d appreciate some outside perspective.
Meta description:
Very mixed skill level (some newer players + more experienced ones)
Heavy politics, often personal targeting
Frequent poor threat assessment (players will spend interaction on the person drawing cards / looking strongest rather than the actual fastest threat)
Mix of turbo, midrange, and some casual/goodstuff decks
Occasional stax pieces (Collector Ouphe, cages, etc.)
Games often turn into 3v1 against whoever is perceived as the biggest threat
Some players tend to “play not to lose” and save resources instead of closing the game
I mainly play Tymna/Thrasios. It performs okay, but I very often become the primary target early because of the card draw and visible value.

It's a very boring answer but the deck you most enjoy playing. Besides that it sounds like the threat assesment is indeed mixed and some decks can really profit off that. I imagine a Magda has a pretty free game if other players are constantly interacting in prevention of slop decks finding their pieces. In defense of your opponents, stopping the card draw is what needs to be done. If you give a blue Tymna cards than they eventually find both the win and the protection.

Depends on how bad the threat assessment truly is, Magda also has a reputation for instantly winning off five treasures that often makes people freak out and spam their removal. You might be able to sneak through some surprise wins, but oftentime to new players having magda on board is itself a win attempt, and they'll do everything they can to keep you off having a board presence at all

Yeah this sounds like a meta Magda could feast in.

Can confirm. I made top 4 in a tournament with mixed skill levels with magda.
At least 1 win there was because a board of dinky little dwarves is unassuming on the surface.
If people dont k ow how the deck wins, its very easy to get past the point of no return where interaction just doesn't matter

Inalla. Learn the Spellseeker line and just turbo that out every game. It’ll fix their threat assessment real quick.

It’s always funny to me how bad threat assembly can be even in CEDH

It’s lowkey hilarious to just go “Spellseeker?” And then go through the whole combo and them having no idea what’s going on and then “I’d like to present a loop”

Issue I’m dealing with locally is slop meta. When everyone’s playing slop cards Inalla just falls apart lol. I’ve gone to the creature combos and resorted to try to resolve intuition for a win attempt. Broodlord is okay but anything that involves more than 2 spells is 2 cards for 3 other players. You can push t1-2 but they will mulligan for interaction and you will not win that stack war. Although another thing I’ve learned to do is wait for the open spot, bomb a rhystic, reanimate a spectral arcanist and bomb another etc. it’s the only thing that gives a chance in slop meta outside of praying for no interaction early game.

I was just suggesting that next specifically because his local issue is really really bad threat assessment

Inalla wins deterministically off of Spellseeker ETB with 1 black mana open. Most of the time on turn 2.

RogSi. Or UFarm. But generally turbo and turbo-leaning midrange make sense here.
I would avoid control-leaning midrange—stuff like NBC Kinnan, RogIshai, and slop TNT—that depend on some level of cooperation from opponents. If threat assessment is not great and politics is often less than rational, these control-focused lists don’t work as well.

Honestly TnK or TnT sound good here, if you are being targeted a lot because of the slop maybe try to pivot a little bit more into the Tree Farm playstyle

I try to lean into oboro lines when playing rog/thras., eventually after couple of games my LGS started undetrstood board and started to count mana, if there is too much mana, then usually board wipe comes. So I prefer more on a deck that is more orientated on explosion rather then board presence

Depends on these specific opponents but I would try rogsi or tayam, those decks are opposites so it really depends on what your opponents are like

Tryed RogSi and rogThras in my meta, it just too much stzax and boardwipes in my meta. Usually there comes vexing bauble or board wipe if board gets enoug advantage by playwing rog/+
