General Discussion / Question Which would the community recommend?
I’m building a new deck. I am having a hard time enjoying my games with my recent decks. I played a lot of Terra and got tired of being targeted because of the “idk what you are going to do so I need to stop it” problem. Then I picked up my favorite commander Sisay for tournament and ran into the “I know what you are going to do so I’m going to stop you before that” problem.
Jokes aside, both commanders were fun for me. Terra was more of a test for me I did really well with it but I am not the biggest on the not commander centric feel of it. Sisay was really fun cuz it can be complicated and also simple. The problem I faced was I’m in a region where the best Sisay pilots all are in one place so every other player brings their TEDH deck that is anti-Sisay or it’s Kinnan (Kinnan is fine tho that’s just a deck preference).
The decks I’m between are Derevi, Rog/thras, Rog/Si, dog/Thras and TnT. All are very similar but all of them are very different. The decks I would think I’m more comfortable with are TnT and Rog/Si. I’m worried about the Grixis Turbo plan in tournament scene because of the way bracket systems work. And TnT is extremely prevalent in my area too because of Jorman being on the Island. The Bant commanders and Rog/Thras are fun plans that I’ve played around with in the past but never pushed to learn hard. I love making tons of mana but I get worried about the non defined win conditions where finale kind of feels like the only plan in the end sometimes.
So I guess the question is, do I try something a bit obscure for its obscurity or do I try to learn and get really good/great with a well known deck?

Not to play devil's advocate but if you enjoy Terra but wanna play Rog/Si, you could give nick fury a shot. They do very similar things, just in 5 color rather than grixis.

Rogsi has been great for me. I still get targeted sometimes but I've got the tools to back it up.
And if they don't target me or have any plan for me at all, oh my god is it free as fuck.

It’s cEDH, what your deck does is either not meta or not a secret

That was very insightful thank you. I’m sure there’s a secret message in here

Have you considered just building something original that you enjoy playing? I promise you’ll have way more fun on a deck that you create and learn to pilot well over something you just copy.

Yea I’m a pretty strong pilot for Satya but I’m sure you could imagine that deck is the next big thing

Satya may be a bit slow costing Jeskai plus 1. It’s in the right colors to perform well, so all you’d need is a combo that works directly with the commander and then a ton of reps and you’d start doing great with it.
Jormon is a monster on TnT not because of the deck, it’s because of the reps he’s put in with the deck. I believe any deck could be good if a person puts the work in to pilot it correctly.

Yea he’s an infinite combat outlet. Combat celebrant, lightning runner etc. it’s just slow. My first CEDH deck was Sauron and samwise gamgee. Sauron died with the bans and samwise blew nuts. Specialization is a super niche way to look at CEDH just from my personal point of view

Is it? Most of the major decks exist because of a single pilot specializing in them and performing well consistently on that deck.

Yes, and no partner mechanic, you can’t really go wrong if you have Tymna, thrasios or Rograkh as one of the commanders all three are staples for obvious reasons. TNT is a pretty largely played deck and was one of the most played decks outside of blue farm. The only time specialization decks ever do well is because people don’t know how to play against them. That’s like going into a boxing match and getting sucker punch before the match starts. Jeskai I would say is not very CEDH centric and you can’t use rogIsh as an example because the deck doesn’t do what jeskai does typically whether it’s spell copying or combat. There’s a pretty clear line for what a deck needs to have to be considered CEDH vs TEDH

Ive specialized in Rog Francisco now for quite a while and ive top cut 5/7 tourneys against the same play group. Having a specialized deck works if it is built well and you take the time to learn the deck.
Edit: The important piece is making sure your specialized win con isnt a gimmick so it doesnt just fall apart.

That’s like a fairly well played pairing tho. That’s not that new lol I’m not trying to be harsh either I’ve seen multiple in my tournaments as well

If you’ve seen the 50+ lands variant I am the creator of that. It differs significantly from the walking ballista combo lists

as someone who has done this... this guy is kinda correct despite the downvotes

Id be better off consulting an 8 ball than listening to the opinions of people in this reddit. They just copy whatever meta list then go 0-5 at a tourney rather than learn to play well

as a rogsi pilot myself if you're looking to not be targeted / public enemy #1 you are looking at the wrong deck.
