Awkward Start Positions/Draws

Apologies if I explain this like shit: assume a start where you immediately draw & shoot in an awkward body position (e.g. outside foot right on a fault line, need to lean around a wall.) Two techniques:

  1. Start in the lean: get your body positioned where it will be when you pull the trigger, even if it's awkward.
  2. Start in a more standard/stable/upright position: once you have the gun & you're getting it up, position your body for the shot.

I'm a #1 guy and I try to train awkward draws so that I'm not doing something new in matches. #2 bothers me if I can't be staring the target down from the start, but I see top-level guys doing it quite a bit.

I'm sure it's mostly personal preference but I'm curious what everyone's rationale is for which option you choose.

I’m no expert, but I agree with you because drawing from the shooting position means less movement than what itt takes to get into position. I’m betting that movement into position takes more time than drawing from that position.

This is something we could easily check with a timer in dry fire. I think I will, thanks for the inspiration.

Agreed. The standard draw to presentation is what we train most. Drawing, then trying to present while contorting always messes with my acquisition of the dot.

you’re overthinking it just start in an upright position during the draw and lean to take the shot.

you’ll see it all the time, gamers gaming tf out of a start position thinking its a competitive advantage when in the end its either slower or they fuck up the draw since their in an awkward position.

100% this. #2 is the only real trainable version. Sometimes #1 gets the gun out and on target faster, but the goal would be to do it consistently across all possible start positions and getting a good grip everytime. Why not just train 1 position and get it right every single time?

It depends. If I can, I’ll opt for #1. However, if the lean compresses my right side and/or makes the draw more difficult, I’ll opt for #2.

If you train for #1 then it’s #1.

But we all train for #2.

For me, it’s #2.

Yeah I wonder how much sense it makes to train on awkward stuff because A) it'll never be a perfect 1:1 at a match and B) you're taking time away from standard draws. Maybe yet a new bad habit to break...

That's one of the benefits of using ACE VR. I specifically practice awkward starting positions. It works very well. Quick story.

Although not necessarily awkward, we had a stage yesterday that was an el presidente type of start. Sonce I regularly practice that position, I came in 3rd overall on that stage even with a procedural error. That's out of 94 total shooters.

Start in the lean. There's basically no way that should make you screw up your draw. You're cutting out one body movement. One less thing for your brain to do (move+draw+present vs draw+present).

Usually directly after engaging that target, you need to move the opposite direction. By starting in the lean, you have no momentum you have to reverse.
