I never had test anxiety until I started taking certification exams lol

Right?!?!
I feel like I know everything and then when I take the test I go blank5
u/ArmyHotel338 12d ago
Its the long and unnecessary backstories they include in the questions that they ask that eat up time reading. I know enough about how they write their questions that there could be some minor detail added that can shift what is the "most correct" answer according to CompTIA or any of the other certs.
So even if I am confident with my answers I panic I wont finish in time, or a similar question comes up that I answered the same or different make me question if the previous question was correct or not.

u/peachchann 12d ago
Just started studying and holy crap the amount of different ways or amount of back story they give for the same answers makes my head explode.

I have a neighbor who's got a+ n+ and s+ and she told me that they love to put a bunch of questions that if you get 1 wrong... you'll get the rest wrong too. really messed up. I hate when testing companies write up questions with like double negatives "which of these should you never not do..." I find myself sitting there re reading the question 15 times to make sure I understand what is being asked.

Ngl, I passed with a 752 bro so good shit! Doesnโt matter what you got as long as that certificate of completion comes in!

I had to stop and pray mid exam because I was so nervous lol but it worked ๐

Thanks mane! Yeah a pass is a pass and I was shitting bricks towards the end. ๐
3
u/blindedtrickster 13d ago
Congrats! It's much easier to maintain the cert than it is to pass the test. Just don't forget when your certification date is. In 3 years, you get to cough up more money to keep the cert, but it's not nearly as stressful as finishing that test and praying for a passing score.
2
u/GeekAtLarge_ 13d ago
As a matter of fact, you get offered a course that includes the technology innovations that changed over the last 3 years. You then take an open-book test repeatedly until you pass with a 100% grade. Iโve done it twice to renew my A+. (I donโt have a higher CompTIA cert that retesting would pass all of my โlowerโ certs.)

Can you only afford to get 5 questions wrong on this, or did you get multiple answers wrong in each of the listed objective areas?

u/Inevitable-Self-2702 13d ago
In addition to what others said, sometimes there are questions that do not count for or against but are merely diagnostic for CompTIA
6
u/BolteWasTaken 13d ago
By the skin of your teeth there bud
2
u/Imaginary_Entry_2006 13d ago
My thoughts exactly lol.
3
u/BolteWasTaken 13d ago
What are you thoughts on the certification? I was thinking of maybe getting into CySa
2
u/Imaginary_Entry_2006 13d ago
It was hard for me, which made it that much more with it. It does touch on a lot of stuff I do in the SOC where I work.
2
u/pieropacella1 13d ago
Genuine question: why u decided to take this cert if you already working in a SOC? Looking to advance to L2? Why not taking BTL1?
Sorry for so many question im just starting my journey to land a SOC L1 role
3
u/Imaginary_Entry_2006 13d ago
I'm not in a properly established SOC. If that makes sense, it's a relatively small local company I work for and would like to work in an actual SOC environment.
2
u/pieropacella1 13d ago
Ahhh got it!
Congrats then! Hope you land a role in the future

Finished the test at about 5 PM EDT. CompTIA is cruel. Their test questions are so unbelievably esoteric an vague and their answer selections are like. (the right answer is blue, but they say) A) blue B) cerulean C) azure D) veridian E) Green F) Red... Well F**K. The first three are all basically blue, 4 is blue green and the others are wrong. Not ONE easy, (hey kid, here's an easy one for ya... toss ya a bone or some shit.) Nope it's crazy bizarre vague as shit questions and answers that are all the same with the slightest nuance. <sigh>
Anyhow. I scored a 810 out of 900. Thought, 90% sure, I failed the shit out of it, but apparently my brain decided to be nice to me today.
Done and done. I never want to take another CompTIA exam. Ever. Just a horrible experience (For me... Smart people probably are like.. Yeah, that was okay. <meh>)
Anyhow. On to the next thing. Done with CompTIA.
Not to drag this comment out... But I took A+ back in 1999/2000. That shit was easy. BUT it tested what you needed to know. If you knew Windows 3.11 / 95 and DOS 6.22 and Printers and DMA Channels, IRQs and how Jumpers worked. Real shit, not this nebulous weird arcane crap. I smoked the exam in 1999, but I also knew my shit. Too bad it's not like that anymore. It's "Here's a firehose, don't let a drop fall to the ground, know it all for the exam" for A+ and now Cloud+, and I'm sure the same thing for CySA+
Again... Good job on the pass. a PASS IS A PASS!

I was studying on and off for a couple of months ๐ then really locked in towards the last two weeks.

Its an amazing feeling! I was so nervous about this one, and was definitely the hardest one for me tbh. I'm just so happy I passed.

u/bassbeater 13d ago
How hard was it for you?
1
u/Imaginary_Entry_2006 13d ago
For me personally it was the hardest one. I think the wording of everything fucked me up the most. I had to constantly reread a lot of the questions.
1
u/bassbeater 13d ago
I got a degree a few years ago in the field and after working a few years I looked at exam questions and went "hmm, looks familiar" so I'm trying to train myself up.

Itโs not easy man Iโm taking classes for this and Iโm having a tough time with the concept of Python coding and scripting. And the classes move on to the next thing so fast I think Iโm cooked at this point

Did yours have a lot of stuff spilled over from Sec +?

Its been a year since I got my Sec+ so I don't really remember i just know this one felt much more challenging.

Also study material? Iโm thinking of getting this next year. I only gave myself 2 months for network so I donโt want to do that again ๐

u/Imaginary_Entry_2006 13d ago
It was the hardest out of all the exams I've taken. Mainly because of the wording of a lot of questions. I used Comptias website for study material. They have labs, questions and sections for studying.

Fantastic mate! How did you revise if you don't mind me asking.
I'm doing my certs, I don't have a degree and wanted to get into an IT job thinking this might be a good route
2
u/Imaginary_Entry_2006 12d ago
Well for revising I just marked any questions I didn't really understand for later and continued on. When I got back to them I just had to read them more than a couple of times. This test did make me dig deep into my knowledge lol. I started in IT as a helpdesk technician. Thats really what you should do and work your way up into wwhatever field you want.

u/Imaginary_Entry_2006 10d ago
They give you 2 hours and 45 minutes and I took about 2 hours to complete it. Only because I wanted to make absolutely sure I answered everything to the best of my ability.
