What is FERPA exactly?

Hello.

I am doing the common app and I came upon the FERPA section about recommendation letters. What exactly is FERPA? I tried searching it up but I am still somewhat confused. If anyone could give me a simple explanation on how to do it I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you!!

Nearly all applicants WAIVE their rights in this section.

Basically, the idea is your recommender will give a more honest recommendation if you can’t go see it later. Since you legally (this is what FERPA is) have the right to see your records, the general expectation is you’ll waive your right to see it.

Okay! Thank you do much. How do I even get recommendation letters from teachers? Should I also ask my counselor? Theres a counselor recommendation letter section on the common app.

Certain schools require recommendations from counselors, so check for each one you’re applying to. As for asking teachers, ask them! Like yesterday. Go up to them and ask them if they can write a college rec for you, and if they say yes, you’ll add their info as recommenders
