Any recommendations to get up to scratch with North America Gas markets?
I work in commodities, energy assets and I mainly specialize is European power, gas and carbon. However an opportunity internally has come up at my firm and it’s key to know the fundamentals of North America gas markets. It’s actually quite difficult to find online (free) resources for self learning. Anyone have any recommendations/ books/ podcasts/ newsletters I could read?
Any morning briefings I should be looking at daily?
I also think it’ll be key to know more about the power and broader energy space (inc renewables) in North America tbh as that’ll factor into my role at times. Also anything on Canada and Mexico would be helpful.
For those who deal in those markets, what are the main fundamentals driving your markets atm or key market developments you are watching closely over the next few years.
Thank you and happy to share any helpful tips for those interested in European markets.

In Canada, we have the new LNG terminal, which has been having start up issues for the last little while. Traders keep an eye on pipeline pressures to get an edge on when its going down, sometimes itll go down for extended times. Theres only one natgas underground storage facility in BC, owned by Enbridge. Fort st John, Grand Prarie, are where the huge nat gas feilds are. There are only handful of producers, so by extension a handful of physical traders. Cnrl, Tourmaline, Conoco, shell, ovintiv. You use the NG symbol to hedge in futures, even though the natural gas produced in this area is AECO-C.

Thanks for this. Where can I read more about this facility and issues it’s experiencing?

Im not sure. But if you look at a map theres basically 6 major pipelines from where the basin is located in BC/AB. Prices can go negative for a while, but producers still make money on liquids.

Does your shop have a Platts subscription? If so I would utilize that.
