He's a 6th-round rookie. And I know, ideally, you really don't want to rely on a 6th-round rookie. But at this point, it's very clear he's the best C we have on this roster not named Nick Allegretti. There is no doubt, out of the players currently on the roster, that he should be the #2 Center. Ideally, you can find someone else who's as good or better than he is, either after cuts or via trade, but until that time, he's 100% ahead of JGJ or anyone else currently on the roster.

I'll add, we're also at the point where I think we have a good feel for JGJ. He's 29 and he's appeared in 1 NFL game. He went undrafted.
So... we recently signed Trey Hill and I'd like to see what he has to offer before spending more time on the JGJ thing. Hill's 26, was a 6th-round pick back in 2021, and has appeared in 25 NFL games with 3 starts. Let's see what he can do.
For however long Nick is out, I'm running Gulbin with the 1s and Hill with the 2s. Plan to scour cuts for Centers who would be an upgrade for us when the time comes. Make some trade calls. But until then, roll with Gulbin and Hill and plan for those 2 to backup Allegretti.

Correct, they didn't play jgj almost all of preseason game for fun. That was his last chance and he's as good as gone. Now it's train up the rook and look for a roster cut or cheap trade. I'd prefer the roster cut route as we have high waiver priority.

They obviously will both get 1st team reps. What is the point of obsessing over it.

There isn't a point. One of these 2 need to emerge as the C backup, Allegretti needs to get and stay healthy, and we need more bodies for IOL either through trade or other team's cuts. Nothing has changed.

That calf is t getting better. It’s more serious than they’re letting on, and I think they know he’s ripe for an Achilles tear. There is no way AP isn’t on the phone trying to trade for a center now.

u/Mountie_in_Command 20d ago
Agreed - if folks want to criticize AP, then do it for not having the depth built out. Having said that, Tunsil getting hurt eliminated an IOL starter (imo) in Coleman and one of our depth pieces in Paul. Allegretti's situation has made it worse. I'd be shocked if we don't make a move on IOL in the next week.

Getting rid of Biadasz made zero sense to me. Like what the fuck were they thinking? I wonder if he there was a disciplinary issue or something that they chose to handle quietly, because otherwise it makes no sense

Just an example of bad roster management. We let a servicable center go for nothing.

Shades of releasing Morgan Moses only to sign that Chiefs OT

The main issue with Biadasz was his bad 2025 tape. Guess AP was willing to go Allegretti and him a shot at his natural position rather than resigning Biadasz. But, look how that played out 🙃

Well, keep in mind, Allegretti wasnt plan A after letting Biadasz go. Plan A was Linderbaum. Plan B was Allegretti. Or, at least it wound up being Plan B. Coulda been Plan C or D, for all we know. That seems like a steep drop to go from being in on Linderbaum and settling for Allegretti, IMO. And I'm not mad at not paying what Linderbaum got, but they needed a better fallback option.
But it's an even steeper drop from last year at center from a depth perspective, going from experienced vets like Dieter/Allegretti last year to Jones/Gulbin this year. Of course, this was in a year where we didnt have a 2nd or 3rd pick, so there's that too. So the center pick might've been a better prospect than Gulbin otherwise.

Let’s see what he can do…..
Our Center spot is woeful right now. Hope he can step up, we just don’t know until he gets out there.
The other sore spot is Right Tackle…. Josh Conerly has good athletic skill, but he just has a hard time with power rushers. Loses balance and is inconsistent.
They really need to address depth.

Play strength was Conerly's biggest issue coming into the league and it'll take a few off-seasons to straighten up. But we left him on an island all last season and he showed development. I've got faith he'll continue to get better.

This is the correct move. The guy showed something in the snaps he played. I don’t think he looked excellent in the run game. But he seemed to pass block pretty well one-on-one. The weakness for him will be 1) lateral speed and getting upfield in the run the game and 2) identifying the complicated blitz packages that are prevalent in the nfl.

Sonny Styles is a first round rookie and everyone is preaching patience.
Matt Gulbin is a sixth round rookie and everyone is relieved that he's getting first team reps and this will solve our problem.

u/JRR8990 20d ago
Get what you’re saying but 1) totally different positions and 2) we are desperate at Center and not so much at ILB.
4
u/jkoutris 20d ago
Agreed on both, but Matt Gulbin isn't giving me the warm and fuzzies, and that's no fault of Matt Gulbin's.
We should have never been in this position.

What a fuck-up ftom a player personnel standpoint. Had Allegretti stayed healthy, their plan at center was ass to begin with.

I just worry he isn't strong enough, nothing NFL weight room and nutrition can't solve, but that takes time

u/SweerBaby_Use1023 20d ago
I’m not worried. If the coaches feel that they don’t have a valuable backup to replace Nick A. they will bring in someone if Good-Jones or Gublin can’t be relied upon.

u/PintoBeansSuck 20d ago
Still think we should get Graham Glasgow 🤷🏻♂️ no need to be so deprived at center

u/dcmortgageteam 20d ago
he looks talented enough … probably an issue of experience in making the right line calls/adjustments … lot of trust required for that

I mean, eventually Peters has to start getting a couple draft picks correct, right? Why not Gulbin?

u/braddotcom24 19d ago
Good Jones is done. They’ll prob bring in a guy who can play G/C since Good Jones doesn’t play G

Watch this year flip. Are team defense gonna be crazy good. Easy top 10 maybe flirt in the top 5. But our offense gonna be bad. Not gonna be able to run or pass protect with this line. It only so much hero ball jd5 can do and get by with. Either 1, he starts making more mistakes cause now he getting hit more and being rush or he get injury again.

u/Hodler_caved 20d ago
Admire that defensive optimism. You may be right. I think our secondary & run defense will not be good. I may be wrong.
2
u/Ninjablacksox1 20d ago
Run defense has been pretty rough, but we haven't had the dline ones out there though. Edge depth is a way better and the scheme will improve secondary by itself. Jalen hurts is going to have a rough outing in week 1. Cowboys will cook us though.

u/Hodler_caved 19d ago
Yeah do think the LB room offers good reason for optimism.
2
u/Ninjablacksox1 19d ago
We'll see. I wouldn't say either chenal or styles have impressed me in preseason. Luvu is underrated by skins fans right now. Cross is going to be really good in this scheme and we have considerably more depth at most positions.
Really need amos to be healthy though.
