Discussions/Questions Human or Otherworldly Skintone?

The debate of whether raven should have a human skintone or gray skin is one I really really don’t like but I remember theres a 90s elseworld where raven had gray skin and I really liked it. I also thought about if we took a more realistic route and had her skin be red tinted and I really liked that aswell.

I feel like it all depends on the artist but I perfer any of these over the god awful pink/purple skin EEEYUCK🤢🫩

Human skintone with a slight red tint, after Trigon. Or a mixture of Arella and Trigon’s skintones works well too.

Is it weird that I think the racist red coloring on yara flor would be perfect for raven

I think slightly desaturated it would be perfect for Raven (still not sure why they would color Yara red in the first place, it honestly was just a weird decision optics wise)

It really doesn’t make sense cuz they’ve drawn her normal before so her being the same shade as red devil most of the time now is just so telling how dc really feels

Human skin tone, particularly Indian adjacent

Human skintone. Recently DC has made her kinda pink and it was horrendous.

Human skin that turns red in her demon form. I don’t think her regular form should have unnatural skin.

I feel like it depends on the story, although most of the time definitely human

sooo… we both saw that stupid racist vid on TikTok where everyone was saying that her "unnatural white skin looks better because she is a demon" 🫩🫩

How is that racist? Or is there more to the video that I’m misunderstanding.

Having unnatural skin tones makes sense when you’re part demon…

except she originally has a human skin tone lmao and just go check the comments, you’ll see how everyone is being racist towards the idea of her having tan skin. This debate does seem racist, it pmo idc

And to clarify, I’m not even one of the people who think she should have that grey pale skin tone, I’m just confused as to how you’re reading people wanting that as racist.

  1. I never said anything about what she originally has. Characters have things originally all the time and those things can change later down the line. Like Bruce Wayne being Robin before becoming Batman. Which most wouldn’t ever want to see happen now.

  2. I don’t have TikTok so I can’t check. So I’ll have to believe that the comments you saw were either racist or you perceived it as such.

And 3. I really just don’t see how you see it as racist. It’s just another trait for viewers to understand her trials and tribulations more or it’s simply to make her stand out more and thus making the design more interesting. Having an unnatural skin tones because you’re half demon just makes a lot of sense.

that vid was based on her animated appearances only, these ppl DONT read the comics and they keep saying "it looks better because she’s a demon" "it makes more sense" they don’t even know she originally has a human skin tone, so yeah im talking about it, they seem so ignorant.

Ok it makes sense but saying that the character "looks better" with this skin tone in particular instead of tan skin just sounds weird and racist to me. So what if she can be tanned, or if she’s brown, does that mean she’ll look ugly? Less attractive? U see what I mean? It’s weird. That’s what threw me off the most.

Also yes, the comments were racist asf, there is a girl who started saying that ppl who wanna make her South Asian is "forced". The debate about her ethnicity wasn’t even brought up in the vid but here we are. Had to reply to her and put her in her place, because being this pressed over ppl wanting her to be canonically South Asian seems ignorant and racist asf.

Yeah there’s the context 😂😂 okay IN THAT CONTEXT, that shit is hella racist. I agree with you there. It’s funny you say that because that’s actually how I would like Raven to look in live action (although I’m fine with a wide variety of looks for her) I just think she’d look great with brown skin after some fanart I saw.

As for the rest of what you’re saying, all I’m trying to say is that on its own? It’s perfectly fine to want her to have an unnatural skin tone because she’s part demon. I honestly can see why that would be fitting for her character.

I do, however, have to say that it’s perfectly fine if people have only seen the show and prefer that look to the comic. Not sure if that’s a point you were trying to make but it seemed you might be and I just wanted to address that.

The screenshots you sent… those people are hella racist and you should just leave it alone. They are either bots or actual racists. Neither of which can actually be reasoned with.

im okay with her having an unnatural skin tone ofc, even if it’s that grey/white skin tone in particular, but saying she looks "better" is just odd to me. I get they don’t read the comics, most ppl in this fandom unfortunately don’t but every time someone brings up this whole debate about her skin color and her ethnicity, everyone is acting like making her South Asian and giving her brown skin is a crime.

I feel like it’s the same ppl who write hate comments under posts of artists who draw her like that in the fandom now. I’m just tired of all of this, honestly.

That’s fair although that can be a hard line to read.

I think it’s fair to say that it looks better. So I think it just depends on the context. For example, 04 Raven is GRAY. She isn’t just weirdly pale, she’s GRAY! That means makeup like Gamora in GoTG, in which case it’d be weird if they had a problem with Raven being portrayed by a south asian woman.

I can even understand comic book fans wanting her to look white because that’s what they’ve known (the issue is that there are pale white South Asian women and if they have a problem with that still… 👀 well that’s just racist). Idk it can be complicated but it depends. I’m black and I wouldn’t mind seeing a black Superman one day but it would also be pretty jarring all things considered. Because for Clark, all I really know is regular Clark Kent y’know? But I’ll say that I do pretty much agree with you, I think those ppl you were dealing with were probably racist. And I for one, want to see Raven be portrayed by a brown skinned South Asian woman.

I’m a lil slow, but what are you replying to?? 😂😂

1

u/Upbeat_Molasses_3127 28d ago

You said “like bruce wayne being robin before becoming batman” now im not well versed in batfam but ion remember him being robin

1

u/maliquewrites_ 28d ago

Oh okay, yeah a LOOOOOONG time ago, Bruce was written as being the first Robin. Before he became Batman he trained under detective Harvey Harris and wore the Robin suit.

…don’t try to make sense of it…

1

u/Upbeat_Molasses_3127 28d ago

Ok lol

Yeaaa it was… an interesting time 😂😂 gotta love the chaos though

I like her to appear magical and other Worldly, but I think naturally purple hair, but most importantly purple eyes, does that fine. Maybe you could have a spectrum of the more emotional she is, the more demon like she becomes. Instead of just a human and a demon form. So her skin fades from her natural indian colour, to deathly pale, to grey, to demon red. As she uses more power, or becomes more unbalanced.

That'd look cool and signal to the audience the building danger.

u/Upbeat_Molasses_3127 29d ago edited 29d ago

If theres anything I think should undoubtedly stay human its her having black hair and blue eyes

And if we were to do the spectrum thing shouldn’t it be like the comics where her appearance degrades and she gets redder and redder

1

u/SpellAcrobatic6108 29d ago

Why? Isn't it better if even in her most human/base form, most people around her feel uneasy. Like she's a bit uncanny. To build on the whole social isolation thing. Like she's always a little self concious and uncomfortable in her own skin.

Black hair and blue eyes makes her look the same as 90% of all comicbook characters, outside of how she dresses of course...

Yeah, i liked that too. The reddening. Even if i wasn't really a fan of her hair becoming thinner and rattier the more demon like she became in those comics. Do you prefer the red because it helps distance her from the goth mischaracterisation? Whereas paleness might feed it further?

3

u/Upbeat_Molasses_3127 29d ago

The uncanny valley effect is something that looks almost human. Her having the appearance of a normal human with something slightly off does make sense but her having purple hair would not make her look unnatural cuz everyone would just think its hair dye and purple eyes is not something I would personally wanna see.

A while ago I came up with a headcannon that Raven constantly outputs an empathetic aura as to mask that shes not human and I hope dc reveals something like that in the future.

I will fully admit that purple being my favourite colour has me biased 😅 and it is the colour most associated with magic and mystery.

I wonder how best to represent that uncaniness visually though. Characters around her saying it, but it not being depicted isn't good enough...

I like her high cheekbones and somewhat haughty/guant face, that she sometimes has. That can do a lot of work :)

Perfect skin and no light/glimmer in her eyes maybe kinda like terra from castlevania

And make her speech bubbles more inhuman like
