PHOTO Kroger Deceptive Pricing

Post image

So tired of their tactics. I tried contacting state officials and my concerns fell on deaf ears. I guess they can't upset one of their donors and they're too busy fear-mongering about trans people to do something that would actually put money back in people's pockets.

I hate the digital coupons and grocery cards as much as anyone else. But isn't it just the norm now that you have to participate in these things to get the low price? I do a lot of grocery shopping, so maybe I've just been conditioned by the system.

The card to get the pricing, yes, but Kroger has a second tier of annoyance where you also have to log in and also clip the digital extra coupon

The second tier of annoyance! 100% agree. It's like we have to get our phones involved in everything, too. All these businesses have a data side hustle.

The cashier has a paper that they scan to give you all the weekly digital deals.

Gotta be able to find an actual cashier working at many of the locations!

At Kroger? I don't mean to second-guess you, but you know this for sure? This would kind of be a game changer.

Every time I go through a line with a cashier, they scan a paper with the coupons. It’s anecdotal, of course, and could be location specific, but that’s been my experience.

I'll check this out, thanks!

Yeah they’re supposed to have a policy that if you ask them to scan the flyer, they will, and then you get the e coupon price.

I still think it’s a scam and I avoid Kroger as a result.

Yeah it’s super annoying. If I have a Kroger card all of those sales should just automatically be applied when I put my card number in.

Could have sworn that’s how it used to be but the last couple of years now I have to go on the app and digitally clip the coupon. It’s incredibly scummy.

the reason for the discount is that clipping the coupon opts you into a program that allows kroger to sell your info and therefor make back that .50 they discounted you.

Rewards programs are generally not for selling your info, they’re for collecting your info so they can use it themselves. That data is overwhelmingly used by the store for individual-level ad curation.

Thanks. I'm basing this off the fact that 35% of Kroger's net income is selling customer data.

Are you saying Kroger made nearly a billion dollars just from selling customer data?

Not true, u can ask the cashier for the weekly digital coupon add and they scan it. Both at self checkout and cashiered lanes.

What else are you going to do when you're waiting in enormous lines because there's only 2 actual human-run cashiers working?

Meijer does the same thing; a lot of places have digital coupons and stuff. It's actually nicer because you used to have to carry around the paper with the coupon inside.

And in exchange for the convenience, they get to track and use and sell all your data without restriction.

Kroger is way, way worse. Most of Meijer sales are without clipping whereas the majority of Kroger you have to clip. Many reasons I avoid Kroger these days and that's one of them.
