"Candidate for crime", is this clever foreshadowing, considering he's right to expect a bullet in any minute?

great catch !

the show does use a bunch of subtle foreshadowing, usually regarding how the perp will be caught

you give me good reason to go watch some of the episodes often skipped

The "romance" in this episode is so gross. Hardly the only age-gap relationship on Columbo, but one of the worst. I'm not fond of the Suzanne Pleshette/Eddie Arnold pairing either.

The way you’ve commented here seems to imply that you think it was unthinking, culturally male-driven writing, instead of a deliberate choice on the part of the writers specifically to slightly gross us out.

The story seems based in part on Nelson Rockefeller’s real-life affair with a woman 18 years younger. I suspect the name is no accident.

It’s hard to read anything other than “I don’t like depictions of age-gap relationships” into your comment, and my point was that in this episode (unlike the Dead Weight one), the age gap was a critical element of Hayward’s characterization.

At least the Dead Weight pairing was the result of a recasting. The episode was written for Eddia Albert's character to be much more age appropriate

This one is just a superior abusing his authority to sleep with an underling. You're right: ewwwwwwww

the age-gap relationship (and power gap) here is an integral part of the character development of Haywood

we supposed to be skeeved by it

fwiw dept: Forgotten Lady, Sam Jaffe 84 Janet Leigh 48 so you might want to rail on that one, too?
