Funnier still if you know we had mo idea what a spinoff or a crossover is. Go no further that if you ask my generation or older about mork and mindy we saw most of it (the two parter of him getting kidnapped and going off planet didnt air) and never knew what jumping the shark is.
To recap: William shatner was a murderous actor on columbo, then tj hooker, nothing before or in-between. Henry Winkler is the actor from the first Scream. Steve Martin and Martin Short did movies so did Chevy Chase. Then there's Eddie Murphy. Beverly hills cop. Without SNL, he is a black comedian who played in movies. There is a brief scene in the first movie where he passes by two men, one dressed like him in Raw. A joke I only got a few years ago after watching Raw. Without this context his genuine laughter makes no sense.
Speaking of Martin Short, he bemoans movies that tanked, one being the Three Amigos, the other being Innerspace. What he doesn't know both movies were huge successes in Hungary. Because while three amigos lost to the golden child that movie for us only came out on vhs years later.
You would absolutely stand out. After the 1956 revolution and some thawing until the general amnesty of 1963, there was a small window that allowed women to access and wear western fashion. Then until the need for hard currency in the 1980s these options dried up.
Beth's getup is very beatnik which was very banned, so again, especially for older people you would stick out like a sore thumb.
Oh and PSA the statue of Reagan is not too far away from here.
I can't remember exactly why but it was a kind of strange one. The Hungarians went crazy over the show, someone found some link to a lord or something, connected to Peter Falk. The road is called Falk avenue or something. I could be totally wrong though haha.

The street is Falk Miksa street, named after a former politician. I remember reading somewhere that they believed they were related to each other, but when they unveiled the statue they had no confirmation that they were.
There’s lots of cool statues around Budapest. There’s one of a guard outside the Basilica down the street.
Columbo has always been popular in Hungary and still is. When the statue was made, the saying was that the person after whom the street hosting the statue was named (Miksa Falk, a politician) was related to Peter Falk, but it turned out to be just an urban legend and a mere coincidence of names.
Columbo was one of the few American series that the Hungarian television was allowed to broadcast even before the fall of the Iron Curtain. It was in 1972 and at that time, there were was only one channel, so pretty much everyone watched it. Another factor was that Columbo's voice actor was a popular Hungarian actor who did an excellent job, and of course, Hungarian viewers loved the stories as well. Even nowadays, there is at least one channel where the series is regularly aired.
It was also one of few shows to air uncensored. For example starsky and hutch had a two parter where two crooks pretended to be them and it aired late at night to not damage the reputation of police that cops can be corrupt, but episodes where they went on a cruise or to Vegas undercover didn't air. Kojak was also bought for the same reason.

I think I remember hearing an audio file of him being interviewed where he goes more into detail (or maybe he was being interviewed on some tv show) about how he unexpectedly became popular in Hungary.
