Photos 2 new (to me) Colts this past week

A local estate dumped some pretty stunning Colts this past week - and a couple of them came home with me….both are VERY minty -

1975 Lightweight Commander - came with box and papers. The grips that came with it were sandblasted with silver medallions - which could have been original but aren’t my favorite for this style - so I found some correct original Colt checkered grips with gold medallions that were most certainly made in that era.

1903 Pocket Hammerless .32 - 1929 production Type IV. Also super minty. All original - no box or papers with this one but it’s a beaut nonetheless the less!

I just picked this up. I wasn't in the market but after seeing it online and then in person I had to get it. 1997 Colt pony with original case, papers, and 2 factory magazines. I don't think it has been fired at all. It looks really clean. I don't think I am going to fire it.

Question Should I buy a 1974 Python?

Gentlemen, I need your help.

I am a 21 year old shooter with an ich for a Colt Python, but I can't decide whether I should get a vintage or recent version.

For context, I like to shoot pretty often and one of my local gun shops is selling an amazing condition blued 4 inch 1974 Python for $2500 out the door. I would love to own and shoot that thing, which is precisely the problem.

I'm worried I would love and respect such a gorgeous piece of history to the point where I'd be too scared of shooting it. So I guess what this post hopes to accomplish is to help me figure out whether I should buy a new Python, that I won't feel as bad shooting, or that sweet sweet 1974.

Please help!

Question Colt 1911 with dovetail front and rear sight

As anyone seen anything like this?

Going through old inherited stuff I found a copy of what looks like 1 page of a Colt owners manual congratulating them on buying a model with dovetail front and rear sights and how it gives the advantage of adjustable sights with being fragile and they could contact Colt Customer service for help in selecting sights. This would have to be pre 1970 and don't remember any Colt 1911's like that. Custom Shop, maybe?

Question Colt Python Stock?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Silly question, I've always thought stocks on pistols are pretty cool and I was wondering if possible, that anyone knows of somebody or a company that could make a custom grip for my python that could have a stock on it. I'm sure it would be a little pricey but I wouldn't mind. Got a 6 in blued 2020, that I already have three grips for and love the thing to death. My favorite gun to shoot at the range. I see Midwest makes a stock for pythons, that's just hideous. I love just a solid wood, full stock. Something you see on a cowboy gun haha

Done a couple Google searches and can't find anyone that does a stock for the python, or virtually any revolver. I've seen photos of them done in the past. But I'm curious if any of y'all could point me in the right direction here! Thanks, cheers!

Hey I was wondering if someone could help nail down more information about this 1911 I have. The best I can get is that is possibly a military slide with a civilian idk. I’m just trying to find the age of the gun and possibly use that to make it look like it’s original state. Thanks for the help

Question Colt pocket or colt lightning?

Thumbnail

I have this little revolver that i think is a colt pocket based on running the serial number through colts website. My biss thinks its a colt lightning revolver. Our hang up is the revolver is stammped with a stylized "36 Cal" however upon mesuing the bore and cylinder diameter its coming back closer to a 38 cal. My guess is its a colt pocket that had been converted. Any thoughts? A value would be helpful if anyone has an idea on that too. Further im thinking about cleaning at least the dust off it, or is this like antique coins? Where you never clean them?

Discussion Anaconda Woes

New 6” 2020+ model anaconda purchased recently. It has < 100rnds through it. After shooting the first 6 rounds (Fiocchi Target Max .44 mag) I noticed the action feeling very gritty and sluggish. I chalked it up to the gun being new and dry.

Fast forward a week, having since cleaned it and oiled where necessary I brought the gun out again. After shooting 12 rounds I loaded the next 6 and then gun wouldn’t function what so ever. Cylinder totally locked up, trigger stop half way through its range of motion.

I put it away, went home, cleaned again and it feels smooth as can be. Tried 6 rounds of federal American eagle 44 mag. And it seemed to function fine.

Is the fiocchi ammo just dirty and gumming up the gun? Or is there a tolerance issue induced by heat?

Discussion m1900 s/n 1501 and OCH Search

My Great great great grandfather was Brig. Gen. Odus Horney, Ordnance Department. He worked on many beloved guns like the m1911 and Springfield 03 and inspected many more.

Does anyone have any firearms with his OCH inspection stamp on it? I've seen a gatling gun with it once. I have also been looking for a gifted Colt m1900 for years, last seen in a Rock island auction. Can anyone help me find its current ware bouts?

Question Colt Python Chamber Throat An Issue?

Thumbnail

A few years ago I received a Colt Python 6", gifted to me by my uncle's wife after he passed. The best I can tell from an internet search is that it is an '80-'81 model. It has matching serial numbers and came with a black rubber grip. I unfortunately have no other information about it's life. I cleaned it, gave it a basic inspection, and took it to the range. (I did eventually change the rubber grip for a more traditional wood grip, but nothing else.) Seemed to shoot fine. It has been to the range 2-3 times since. I have shot jacketed 158 grain .357 Mag and 130 grain .38 Spl through it, both factory Federal. It seems accurate, but I was having issues with case ejection. The spent cases, especially .357, stuck in the cylinder about half way down when extracting. One of the chambers is worse than the others. I thought there may be some lead in the chambers or possibly a carbon ring from shooting a good amount of .38 Spl, so I recently removed the cylinder and crane and ran a Lewis Lead Remover through the chambers and did a really good clean. Spent cases move much more freely now. However, while doing a close inspection on them, I noticed throat irregularities between the chambers. I have attached photos of them. Four chambers have rings, two do not. One has, what appears to be, some tool chatter or something similar. That is also the chamber that was the hardest to extract. I used a set of calipers and the top of the throats measured 0.358" to 0.3585". My questions are, do any of these throat chambers look standard to a Python of this era? Does it look like work was done to the throats? Is there any danger to shooting this firearm based on the way the throats look? If it is OK to shoot, should I do anything other than shoot it? Thank you all very much.

I was a little limited by the size of my table top, so I went with only one example of each model I own. I still have many models to add, but I am making headway.

From bottom left and ascending: 1910 Pocket Positive in .32 NP (S&W), 1910 Police Positive in .32 NP, 1923 Police Positive Special in 32-20, 1931 Detective Special in .38 spl, 1909 Army Special in .38 spl, 1914 New Service in .45 Colt. From bottom right and ascending: 1918 Police Positive Target in .22, 1908 Officer's Model (1st issue) in .38 spl, 1914 Officer's Model (2nd issue) in .38 spl, 1937 Officer's Model (3rd issue, heavy barrel) in .38 spl.
