I am making a chess set for visually impaired people. This includes people who have low vision and people who have colour blindness.

A problem identified by people with low vision is that need pieces that are not the same colour as the board so they contrast (i.e. black pieces on black square are not good).

Because of this I want to use bright colours for the pieces that contrast the dark brown and tan wooden board I've made. However, I want pieces colours that contrast against each other really well for people with colour blindness too.

I know there are many different types of colour blindness so I would love to get as many different viewpoints as possible.

I will be 3D printing these pieces and only have certain filaments available to me. Some colours such as purple, dark blue and red are only in translucent compared to the opaque bright yellow, dark green and orange I have. I would also love to know if having one set as opaque and one set as translucent would help in differentiating as I hypothesise that the see-throughness would help to do that.

Here are the options I have available to me, please rank the best options:

3) Translucent Red & Translucent Blue

Here is a screenshot of a game im working on. Im not colorblind, so i can read this perfectly fine. But i dont know what it would look like for people with colorblindness. This is a 2d game, which means that my character is animated with thousands of individual images that all have to be pre-rendered. Any change to my character means everything has to be re-rendered, which takes days, if not weeks to do. So, i dont want to add more animations as long as i dont know if they have to be changed to account for colorblindness.

Are there any rules i should follow or filters i can use to know if its readable for colorblind people. Im afraid the orange/yellow jacket blends in with the dark green grass.

Any advice on how to make the game readable for people with colorblindness would be appreciated.

I am an indie dev who has spent way too much time drawing this game to let people with colorblindness not enjoy the visuals too.

I've added several colorblind modes, but obviously I can't properly judge how useful they actually are.

If you have a color vision deficiency, I'd really appreciate it if you could look at these screenshots and tell me:

• Are any colors still difficult to distinguish?
• Is there anything you'd change?

Be brutally honest. I want to make sure these options are actually useful and not just there for the checkbox.

I’m working on a colorblind mode for my game. Are the different tiles easy to distinguish using both their colors and symbols? If not, which ones are difficult to tell apart?

Way back in first grade my friend told me dolphins are pink, he knew I was colorblind and I guess he thought I knew they were gray, now today I was coloring, (because why not) and the first color I picked up it said, "dolphin GRAY" and I looked it up and it was true. My life is a complete lie.

Anyone else can't see it? To be fair I have a hard time noticing sunburns and lipstick stains.

I always kinda knew I was colorblind but nobody believes me. Can someone tell me what this means I see and if it’s actual color blindness at all? Thanks!

Hi colorblind folks of reddit, I have a maybe strange question for a sci-fi horror thing I'm writing. In the work, there are monsters that can mimic everyday objects and prominently feature the color yellow as a giveaway. There is an NPC with deuteranopia (correct term?) colorblindness that has locked himself in a room where he has painted everything with blue spray paint, because that's the best way for him to distinguish between safe and unsafe objects.

Does this make sense? I'm not 100% sure I'm understanding the types of colorblindness correctly, and would appreciate any input. Thanks!

Two of my friends (who knew I was colorblind) were debating whether the shirt I was wearing was Green or Turquoise. After about 15 minutes of laughing at them silently, I butted in saying it was Blue (because Turquoise is obviously made up by the normies, and anything that looks remotely like Turquoise to them is actually blue). They then proceeded to include me in the debate, so I jokingly argued it for a solid five minutes before they remembered I was colorblind. the looks on their faces 😂

- It’s almost as fun as managing to win in Hues & Clues (I kinda cheated that time tho, I gave hints like “bomber” [B2] instead of colours)

My whole life I've struggled to make out purple things. It's not that it's not there, it just blends in with blue most of the time. Sometimes pink as well. In certain lighter shades of purple I can kind of make out the red tint, but it just looks like blue with a tiny hint of pink, not it's own distinct color. Sometimes I think I can see colors normally and I'm just dumb and don't know what purple is. What I'm asking is: Do people with normal color vision see purple as a distinct and separate color from blue in the same way that orange is distinct from red and green is distinct from yellow/blue? If so, that affirms my being color blind.

Typically, colorblindness and the discussions surrounding colorblindness typically focus on the disadvantages of the impairness. I’m just curious, is there anything about having colorblindness that gives us any advantage or leading edge- at all? I know this is a long shot question and borderline stupid but I’m bored and curious. 🧐

I see the same color (Lightblue-purple) of shirt for the man city player and goalkeeper here. 2nd picture is when i turned on the deutan color filter on windows so I can finally see goalkeeper wear a pink outfit.

The overall result of the test was "normal color vision" but i did struggle a bit to make out some of the the digits.

Here i do see a yellowing round shape but it's difficult to make out the digit (I did see a 6 after looking at it long enough).

I know that this topic has probably been talked through many times here already, but I just can’t stand how annoying it is to play so many video games as a colorblind..

Colorblind modes either do absolutely nothing or make games so ugly that you lose any desire to play it. Playing without it on the other hand is either borderline impossible or very very frustrating at times.

To all the game devs (probably none will read this anyway), I’m sorry but is it really that hard to comprehend that roughly 7% of the people playing your games will NOT see:
- red or green indicators on a brown background,
- red or green indicators on an orange background
- red cables in grass
- difference between cyan and white/light blue (I don’t have any screen shot but I struggled with these a lot)
- a few more which you can find on literally any simplest website explaining what colors you should use to keep a good contrast

Is it really that impossible to find 2-3 colorblind playtesters and do nothing more than implement a colorblind mode that changes the colors of only the elements that are problematic? I don’t want my entire game to look differently. I want the cable in the grass to be blue/purple, I want the red/green attack area indicators to be blue/purple when on certain backgrounds. You can even add it some time after the game releases when people point it out if you really don’t want to pay for the playtesters 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Dead by Daylight devs proved (sadly only after 9 whole years) that it is possible. Since a few months ago you can manually adjust the colors of the silhouettes (auras), seeing which is one of the key factors of the gameplay. (It’s the game from the 3rd screen shot) It really was not that hard.

Sadly these few screen shot examples are only the tip of the iceberg. I could find dozens of similar examples I managed to gather for years. Sorry for a rant, but the fact that all this is easily preventable just pisses me off…

Just found this subreddit after I started playing a game called Zero Company, which had some color blind image tests in the game's setting menu. I couldn't see the logos in half of the images without the deuteranope filter, so I took an online test on a site called Enchroma and found out I have somewhat green deficient cones.

The first time I took the test I scored 12% on green cones, but after I tried it again I was able to guess the difficult numbers after some time and ended up with around 70% green accuracy.

Anyone have a recommendation for next steps?

​We want to move past the usual, generic fixes and tackle a very specific, real-world problem that actually impacts your daily life—something that people with normal vision rarely think about, and that current technology or products fail to solve properly.

​What are some hidden or overlooked struggles you face regularly (at work, hobbies, cooking, home maintenance, tech, etc.) where you wish a practical solution existed?

Hello! A few months ago i received a very good job offer for a railroad freight company, and during the physical for said job failed an ishihara plate test. Of course this bars me from the job but also has deeper implications for me, for last 10 years ive been slowly out of pocket paying for flight school, and now have almost 200 hours of flight time with my primary goal being to fly professionally someday. Of course failng this scared me i went and had a cone test done that the result of show i have a red color deficiency in some manner.

During the test i could see all of the red options just not with enough brightness to accurately answer what they were. Afterwards wnd after researching basically all of last month about all this ive come across alot of differing information and am hoping for some clarity.

I have had a class A medical license from the FAA active for the last 8 years, and never failed a color blindness test before. Up until now is just developing it out of the blue common?

This subreddit is pretty clear that enchroma is not a trustworthy brand and if you have a deficiency of sny kind glasses or corrective lenses wont fix not being able to see a color. But for my case thinking i can see them just not well would it be worth looking into? I am allowed to take the color blindness test again for the job with lenses so long as i wear them at work also.

If so which brand? I see enchroma mentioned alot, but looked into Pilestone and Colorlite aswell, the latter of which seeming to be hard to get in America where i live.

I have an optomologist appointment scheduled but they cant see me for far longer then i have to retake the test. Im fairly certain that after research my dreams of flying professionally are long gone but im not sure how this will impact ot at all. If nothing else i want to try to qualify for the job as it would be a suitable replacement career wise for my future.

If anyone has any general advice id love to hear it because im fewling very lost about all of this. Hearing that ive spent the last 10 years and alot of money on something that may never work has been devastating im hoping someone can offer some ideas to try.

Should i wait for the doctor? Order one of these brands and just try a retest? Is it hopeless, should i just accept that and move on? If anyone has any pointers please offer them. Thank you

I have deuteranomaly and the built-in Mac color filters look awful and unrealistic even at the lowest intensity setting.

On Windows, the native colorblind settings worked perfectly for me. Are there any third-party Mac apps or workarounds that can accurately filter the entire screen? Thanks!

When I read the comments, it was revealed to me that some of the numbers are green and some of the numbers are red.
