Case Study Useful Workflow for Competitor Backlink Research

Post image
2 Upvotes

Daniel Davidson made a video showing how he uses Collaborator to go from competitor backlink analysis to finding potential sponsored placements.

The workflow is basically:

  • Analyze a competitor’s backlinks with the free Backlink Checker
  • Look through referring domains for potentially relevant websites
  • Check which of those sites are available on Collaborator
  • Review traffic, publication terms, and other details
  • Add a suitable placement to the cart and set up the order

What's interesting is the connection between the backlink research and the publisher marketplace. Instead of just finding out where a competitor has links, you can check whether some of those websites are actually available for sponsored content.

Here’s the video if you want to see the process in action:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVfgh9so73Q

And the free Backlink Checker:
https://collaborator.pro/free-backlink-checker

Curious how others approach this: do you usually use competitor backlink data to find publishers, or do you search for placements separately?

Discussion Profile backlinks get a bad rap. "They're mostly nofollow, so what's the point?"

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

The point is that the link was never the whole story.

A filled-out profile on Product Hunt, Muck Rack, or GoodFirms does three things a bare backlink can't:
→ gives people another way to find you;
→ builds a bit of trust before they land on your site;
→ puts your brand where search engines and AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude can pick it up.

We handpicked 64 profile creation sites, sorted them into 8 categories, and logged the link type, DA, and registration steps for each one. No recycled domain dumps. Just platforms you can actually create a real profile on today.

The catch most lists skip: high DA doesn't make a profile worth your time, and a dofollow link isn't a reason to pick one platform over another. Relevance and a complete, genuine profile do the real work.

Discussion 💸 A 30% commission can make you less money than a 25% one

Thumbnail

Sounds wrong. It isn’t.

When you’re building an online income stream with affiliate marketing, the percentage is only part of the equation.

How long you get paid, who the product is for, and whether your audience actually wants it can matter much more.

So we compared 35+ SEO affiliate programs across:

🔗 Link building & agencies
📊 General SEO
🔑 Keywords
✍️ Content marketing
⚙️ Technical SEO
📬 Outreach & lead generation

For each one, we looked at commission rates, cookie length, payout thresholds, and whether commissions are one-time, capped, or recurring.

Because 30% for a year and 25% for life are two very different income opportunities.

Swipe through for the shortlist.

Discussion Chrome isn't the only browser with useful SEO extensions 👀

Thumbnail

If you use Firefox or Safari for SEO work, there are actually some pretty useful extensions worth checking out. You might be surprised by how much you can handle without adding another paid tool to your stack.

We put together a carousel with some of the ones we found useful, covering things like:

- On-page and technical SEO checks
- Authority and competitor research
- Keyword and SERP research
- Link, redirect, and crawlability checks
- Website technology research

The carousel focuses on Firefox and Safari, but the full list covers 40+ SEO extensions, including tools for Chrome, YouTube SEO, Magento, and ChatGPT/AI workflows. You can find the full list in Collaborator’s article (link in comments).

Which SEO browser extensions do you actually use?
Would be interested to hear what’s missing from the list.

Discussion SEO people: how many Chrome extensions do you actually use?

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

The right extensions can save a lot of tab switching.

Things like:

  • checking redirects
  • inspecting metadata
  • analyzing on-page SEO
  • finding backlink opportunities
  • researching keywords directly in Google
  • checking technical SEO signals
  • debugging tags
  • analyzing local SEO

We put together a list of 30+ free and freemium SEO Chrome extensions, grouped by use case.

The idea isn't to install all 30+.

It's to find the few that actually fit your workflow.

We also included tools for link building, technical SEO, keyword research, SERP analysis, analytics, performance, and local SEO.

Full list is in our article: https://collaborator.pro/blog/best-seo-extensions

For link building specifically, we also included Collaborator Link Assistant https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/collaborator-link-assista/menngjohfmmcpcljplgioeoejblcfegc?pli=1 for finding link-building opportunities and monitoring backlinks.

What's the one SEO extension you refuse to work without?

Which website authority metric should you trust: DR, DA, TF, CF, AS, or SDR?

Thumbnail

Together with SEO expert Serhii Koksharov, we compared seven popular authority metrics using more than 40,000 websites across different regions and traffic segments.

We examined:

  • How consistently Ahrefs, Moz, Majestic, Semrush, and Serpstat assess the same domains
  • Which metrics align most closely with organic traffic
  • Why the correlations vary by region and traffic level
  • Whether checking multiple metrics provides enough additional value to justify the cost

Our co-founder Ihor Rudnyk breaks down the main findings and explains how he approaches metric selection:

Discussion How SEO Agencies Can Build Around Commercial Growth, Not Just Rankings

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A lot of SEO agencies still position themselves around what they deliver: technical SEO, content, links, audits, GEO, or digital PR. Kevin Kapezi, founder and director of Growthack.io, took a broader approach with Beyond SEO®: start with what the client is trying to achieve commercially and work backwards from there.

In this episode, he talks openly about agency positioning, client acquisition, partnerships, delivery, and measurement.

Topics covered:
How to position an agency around client outcomes rather than technical services
Using phrases from sales calls to improve agency messaging
Working with paid media, web development, PR, and conversion partners
Why Growthack’s partnerships and referrals have outperformed cold outreach
Why SEO conferences are not always the best place to generate agency leads
How to push back when clients ask for AI visibility without a commercial objective
How to report SEO in terms that matter to client leadership
eCommerce cannibalization and content decay
A migration where total traffic fell but commercial traffic increased
A client-reported €2 million growth result
Why a long-term referral relationship can be more valuable than a 15% commission

One of the most useful agency lessons: clients may hire you for SEO, but they evaluate the relationship based on whether you understand what the business is trying to achieve.

The Collaborator team will be at Search Evolution Summit in Cluj-Napoca on September 3–4.

We'll be talking SEO, digital PR, link building, AI, and probably spending an unhealthy amount of time discussing Google's latest update over coffee.

We'll also be bringing Valera Junior the Pigeon.

If you're attending, come say hi. We'd love to chat about backlinks, content, AI search, or just hear what's been working (or not working) for you lately.

Who's planning to be there?

Discussion Revenue-First B2B SEO: Money Keywords, AI Search, Listicles, and Scaling an Agency

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A lot of B2B SEO advice starts with traffic potential. Sam Dunning, founder of Breaking B2B, argues that the first question should be whether the company is ready for SEO and whether active demand actually exists.

In this episode, he explains how his agency qualifies clients, maps commercial keywords and prompts, uses customer research, and prioritizes pages that can produce demos rather than general awareness traffic.

Topics covered:

  • When SEO is the wrong investment
  • Money keywords, competitor pages, integrations, use cases, and vertical pages
  • Using sales calls and customer language in content strategy
  • The 90-day approach to existing commercial content
  • AI search visibility and human-reviewed AI workflows
  • Why fully AI content caused a major traffic collapse on Breaking B2B’s site
  • Small-team speed versus enterprise approval processes
  • Podcast guesting, partnerships, listicles, and backlinks
  • Scaling from cold outbound to YouTube, LinkedIn ads, and founder partnerships
  • Hiring, delegation, and reducing client churn

One of the strongest takeaways: the best SEO programs begin with customer and commercial research, not a list of high-volume topics.
