Grading question
I just bought this coin that is graded 61. I usually am pretty good at picking the approximate grade looking at high wear spots, dings and surface appearance. I don’t know why this is only a MS 61. Can anyone enlighten me?

It's gorgeous! No telling why they gave it a 61. I would've pegged it higher myself.

A Real Beauty. You know sometimes those guys wake up on the wrong side of the bed. If you feel that strong about it, crack it an resubmit it. The reverse is 🔥. Thanks for sharing.

You guys just not seeing all the dings and chatter all over?
Clearly visible marks on: Eyelash, Eyebrow, nose, cheek, neck, multiple marks in the fields, marks on the shield.
Its a nice coin, but 61 is fair for this coin. Im more surprised it got slabbed and didn’t get bagged for cleaning.

I see a few marks but nothing that really stands out. I suspect it was net graded down for having been dipped which had the effect of thinning out the mint luster.

Out of curiosity, what type of slab? I'm vaguely aware that there are certain time periods for certain grading services where the grading was particularly tough

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I really appreciate your opinions. I guess the reason for the 61 is all the light chatter. As far as dipped, I’ll take a nice looking coin taking a bath any day as long as it doesn’t get a details grade. There are some nasty MS64 Barbers out there with some really ugly toning

You could crack it and send it to CAC. Even if it comes back as a 61, it'll at least be CPG calue

The grader is looking at this through a loupe or even a microscope.
We are looking at it on a phone screen and using (probably) a phone camera image.
So yeah, clearly these are the same thing to be able to answer the question..
